Description
The Montes Alpha Special Cuvée Chardonnay is a beautiful bright golden Chardonnay from Chile. With intoxicating ripe tropical fruit in the aroma, such as pineapple and banana, combined with juicy white fruit (peach). Elegant in taste. The maturation on French oak barrels produces extra aromas of hazelnuts, toffee and vanilla. Generous and fresh at the same time. The acids are pleasant, the aftertaste is persistent.
A beautiful gift bottle. With its broad appearance, you really have something in your hands. And a lot of people will fall for this seductive Chardonnay. Once the bottle is open, pour it with fishy dishes, such as salmon tartare, lobster or fresh shellfish, with white meat or pasta with light(er) cream sauces or with mature cheeses. A perfect wine for a dinner party!

The 2020 Chardonnay Alpha Special Cuvée from Zapallar, Aconcagua Costa, was 40% aged in new French barrels, the rest in used. Greenish yellow in the glass. The nose offers intense notes of wood, hazelnut, cedar and hints of vanilla, while white fruit makes an appearance after the creamed corn. Creamy, terse and lactic, it has an unctuous feel with late-arriving but vibrant freshness thanks to the terroir. A flashback to the 2000s.

Montes is a winery established in early 1988 by Aurelio Montes, Douglas Murray, Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand, whose vision was to begin producing high-end wine of a kind unavailable in Chile at the time. Three decades on, it’s a private limited company controlled by the Montes, Garcés Silva, Barros, Murray, Guarachi and Vidaurre families and has established itself as a key producer, able to command some of the highest prices per case in the country. Headquartered in Apalta, they use grapes from different locations, from Limarí to as far north as Itata, as they wait for the vineyard they planted by the Chiloé canals to mature. With a portfolio of iconic wines such as Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon, Montes Folly Syrah and Purple Angel Carménère, they also have a line of more experimental offerings under the Outer Limits label. Their latest release is the Special Cuvée line, which represents a return to 1990s styles with a modern twist.

In 1987 was het Aurelio Montes en 3 partners die het initiatief namen om een wijnbedrijf op te starten met als doel de volledige potentie van Chili als wijnland te benutten en de hoogst mogelijke kwaliteit wijn te produceren. Dat is inmiddels aardig gelukt, Montes is een van de absolute topproducenten in Chili en Aurelio werd recent nog gekozen tot meest invloedrijke wijnman van het land. Montes beschikt over vijf wijngaarden. Drie ervan bevinden zich in Curico Valley en twee in Colchagua Valley, samen beslaan zij een oppervlakte van 600 ha. In 2004 is er in Alpalta een totaal nieuwe winery gebouwd die volgens de Chinese Fengh Shui filosofie is opgezet. Inmiddels heeft ook Aurelio jr. zijn sporen als wijnmaker verdiend en samen met zijn vader vormt hij een hecht en succesvol team.
