Description
The Niellon family has a long history of winemaking, dating back to the 19th century when it was founded by Michel Niellon's grandfather, Léon Niellon. In the 1960s, Michel Niellon took over the family business from his father, Marcel Niellon, and continued the tradition of producing exceptional Burgundian wines. The estate has six hectares of vineyards, primarily located in the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation. The vineyards are situated at varying altitudes between 200 and 400 meters, contributing to the unique character of their wines.
Domaine Michel Niellon is characterized by meticulous attention to detail. Both the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are hand-picked and rigorously selected for quality. Fermentation is initiated using the natural yeasts present on the grape skins. The wines are aged in French oak barrels, with a portion of new wood (typically 15% to 30%). Malolactic fermentation and sur lie also take place in these wooden barrels. Domaine Michel Niellon is known for producing high-quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines. Their iconic wine, the Bâtard-Montrachet, is highly regarded. Moreover, the Chassagne-Montrachet wines from these products are known worldwide for their exceptional quality.
One of Burgundy's Premier Cru estates of the year is Niellon. A classic Chardonnay from Chassagne Montrachet, this estate has quietly grown in recent years into a producer of top wines. The Chassagne-Montrachet Le Champgains from Domaine Michel Niellon is a premium white wine produced on a small 7.5-hectare estate in Burgundy. Champs Gain, or Champgain, is a renowned vineyard in Chassagne Montrachet. Founded in 1960 by Léon Niellon, this estate is a master at crafting silky wines with an incomparable, almost oily texture. This Chassagne-Montrachet Le Champgains is also aged in oak barrels. The wine's color turns golden over time, and the nose is quickly dominated by notes of acacia and honey. The palate is expansive and unparalleled richness. A hint of spice and crushed stones adds nuance to the finish. Overall, this is a rather understated and elegant style from Champ Gains, a vineyard that often produces exuberant Chassagnes. This wine doesn't need to age very long before revealing its full potential; four to five years in the cellar is sufficient. Chassagne-Montrachet Le Champgains from Domaine Michel Niellon is a prestigious wine recognized for its exceptional quality and should be discovered by lovers of prestigious wines and white Burgundy wines.

From: Now, For My Latest Trick: Burgundy 2022 (Jan 2024)
The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Village has wonderful definition and precision on the nose, hints of dried yellow flowers complementing the citrus fruit, the oak well integrated. The palate is very well balanced with a vibrant, orange-zest- and tangerine-tinged entry. It’s quite linear and taut, with an almost Puligny-like tension on the finish. This comes recommended. Tasted at merchants' 2022 Burgundy tastings in London.
