Description
In 1981 Mas Martinet was born, a life project and a dream come true. The brand is the result of the passion of Josep Lluís Pérez and Montse Ovejero and is now in the hands of the entire family Josep Lluís, Montse, Sara, Núria, Adrià, Marc, Jordi, Armando, Pilar. The unique wines of Mas Martinet in Priorat have enormous storage potential. For more than 25 years Martinet has been at the top of the Priorat appellation. For a few years now father Pérez has withdrawn from Mas Martinet and the wines are vinified by Sara Perez (see also Venus, Dido and Gratallops ). Sara is also the wife of another icon namely Rene Barbier Jr known from Clos Mogador and Rene and Sara also make wines under their own names namely Sara Pérez y René Barbier. Of course we also carry these wines.
The Pesseroles Brisat is a striking orange, cloudy wine with a lot of character. It is a white wine with skin contact (also called orange wine), made from a blend of: 42% Garnatxa blanca, 35% Picapoll and 23% Pedro Ximenes. All the grapes were harvested at the same time, with whole bunches fermented for several weeks.
The nose is pronounced and clearly influenced by the contact with the skins, with aromas of: Peach, quince, beeswax, pollen and an earthy touch. According to winemaker Sara Pérez, these primary scents only disappear after about seven years, after which notes emerge that are reminiscent of petroleum, comparable to Rieslings from slate soils (such as in Germany). In the mouth the wine is tannic (rare for a white wine), full and tense, with a lot of structure. The Mas Martinet Pesseroles Brisat is a pronounced gastronomic wine, ideal for food pairing

The very orange and cloudy 2021 Pesseroles Brisat is a characterful skin-contact white produced with a blend of 30% each Garnacha Blanca and Picapoll Blanco and the rest Pedro Ximenes, Cariñena Blanca, Trepat Blanc and Xarel.lo, all harvested and fermented together with full clusters for a couple of weeks. It has a characterful nose that is very much marked by the skins, with notes of peach, quince, beeswax, pollen and an earthy touch. These sensations, Sara Pérez told me, take seven years to go away, and then come notes reminiscent of petrol, similar to other whites from slate soils (Germany). The palate is seriously tannic and with volume and tension, making it a very gastronomic wine. It has 12.78% alcohol, so it didn't reach the minimum alcohol required by the Priorat appellation. It was bottled in March 2023. One day, I have to taste this wine from 2014 to see the evolution. Only 750 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2023.
Mas Martinet is the project from the Pérez Ovejero family, where they work 25 hectares of vineyards and produce 60,000 bottles. They learned a lot from the 2021 vintage, a year with plenty of water (more than the actual rain total, because there was 60 centimeters of snow that didn't compute in the annual rainfall), and they discovered that they could keep the character of the wines with less ripeness in the grapes. There are two wines that were denied the appellation of origin because they don't reach the minimum alcohol required by the appellation.

From: From Revolution to Evolution: The Garnatxas and Cariñenas of Priorat & Montsant (Nov 2024)
The 2021 Pesseroles Brisat is a blend of Picapoll Blanc, Pedro Ximénez and Garnatxa Blanca, sourced from Gratallops in Priorat. This orange wine was soaked on the skins for three weeks and with the stems for three months. It builds aromas of apricot and vermouth-like herbs, offering a taut and tannic yet refreshing mouthfeel. Brimming with energy and a distinctive “hippie" vibe, this unique wine was kissed by the sun in the slate soils of Priorat.
- By Joaquín Hidalgo on November 2024
Josep Lluis Pérez is one of the oenologists who changed the history of Priorat with his technical expertise and his nose for a unique style. Trained as a biologist, Pérez founded Más Martinet in the early 1990s and a school of oenology soon thereafter. It’s widely held that everyone who makes wine in the region today has come under his influence at some point, including his daughter, Sara Pérez, who has taken over oenology duties at the winery. A woman with a strong character and her own ideas, Sara Pérez has set Mas Martinet on a clear path as to which varieties and soils are best for their wines, also instilling a firm set of principles. Vineyards such as Pesseroles (planted in 1939 in the foothills) and Els Esurçons (which climbs up the hills along pure slate terraces), yield strong examples of the house’s talents. Working in an increasingly radical style, today, Mas Martinet uses barely any sulfites, produces Brisat (orange) wines and crafts less concentrated Garnatxas than those seen in the past. The resulting wines bear vibrant, energetic, modern profiles, as seen in Clos Martinet, Camí de Pesseroles and Els Escurçons.

At Mas Martinet, all chemicals in the vineyards have been banned. Sara and her team at Martinet are always looking for new perspectives, with a culture based on balance, sustainability and harmony with nature. Deeply committed to tradition, to the environment and to people. They recover some varieties and reinvent some processes and materials according to the principles of agroecology and minimal intervention with maximum respect for the people who work on it. They process the crops in an environmentally friendly manner, treating the processes as respectfully as possible. Examples include growing legumes and wild species of flowers and shrubs in order to provide food for the entire chain. they base us on the lunar calendar to optimize (bio-dynamic) the natural treatments we use in the vineyard, such as compost and herbal infusions.
Clos Martinet comes from the plots of the Mas d'en Martinet estate, located in the wine region of the town of Gratallops. The land, which contains slate, and the different exposures of the vineyard each year give this wine the typical character of an estate. Garnatxa Negra, Cariñnyena, Garnatxa Peluda and Sirà, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The wine press is unanimous in its praise for the wines of this iconic house. Wines getting points close to the maximum limit of 100 points is standard rather than exceptional. Supply from the relatively small stamp vineyards is very limited and the storage potential of the wines is unprecedentedly long.
