We actually don't need to say much about the iconic winemaker Rene Barbier. His Clos Mogador is perhaps the most famous Priorat wine. It is an organically grown full deep red wine and is one of the absolute top from the Priorat. The Clos Mogador is full of black ripe fruit, herbs, minerals, coffee, truffles, beautiful tannins and a very impressive aftertaste. The Clos Mogador is a blend of Garnacha, Cariñena, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon . The grapes are picked over a period of two months, because they do not all ripen at the same time. The grapes are grown biodynamically, with attention and respect for the plant and the natural conditions, and all work on the land is carried out by hand.

The grapes come from vineyards from slate terraces that give the wine that famous pure minerality that Priorat is famous for. The grapes coming from slate and biodynamic cultivation of Clos Mogador and the vinification techniques of the Barbiers are seen worldwide as the example of how you can get a wine that so perfectly summarizes a "terroir" with that subtle fusion of fruit and nature.

The dense, purple-black color of this vintage heralds an impressive bouquet that combines spiciness, smokiness and herbs with a nice hint of toast. On the palate, all these impressions are enhanced by several layers of coffee aromas, chocolate, licorice and ripe, generous fruit. The silky but persistent tannins are accompanied by a refreshing acidity . As far as we are concerned, a wine that should not be missing in a beautiful wine collection and compared to top French or Italian wines, this is still relatively very affordable. Be sure to decant in its younger years because this is a wine that is known to improve for many years to come and has a drinking window until 2035+

The 2021 vintage is a relatively fresh vintage that gives us a wine with an unusual continental character in the Priorat. René's desire over the years has been to vinify fresher wines, with much less impact of oak, with more prominence of Grenache and Carignan, all so that we can enjoy a wine that is purer, more concentrated and more subtle at the same time. This Clos Mogador 2021 is all delicacy on the nose. The fruit is fresh, the aromatic Mediterranean herbs refined. The taste, on the other hand, is deep, with a satiny texture and a measured grip. A rarity that is exciting from the start, just a prelude to the magnitude it will reach. Supply of the 2021 vintage is again very limited. The 2021 vintage is a blend of 45% Garnatxa, 29% Carinyena, 16% Syrah and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon

For the first time in Spain, Clos Mogador, one of the prestigious wines made by René Barbier in the DOCa. Priorat awarded the prestigious qualification «Vi de Finca» “Vi de Finca” is an additional qualification to the DOCa. Priorat certification, which already recognizes this wine. Clos Mogador was the first wine to receive this prestigious qualification throughout Spain. It certifies that all the grapes used to make this wine have come from the single vineyard of Clos Mogador for at least the last five years (five years that can be documented and traced), and at the same time is awarded to a wine of international fame enjoy for more ten years.

René Barbier is, together with Carles Pastrana of Clos de l' Obac, Alvaro Palacios (from Rioja , but known for L'Ermita in Priorat) and José Lluis Perez (Clos Martinet, and father of Sarah Perez), one of the "founding fathers" of this recently discovered or rediscovered Priorat wine region. Clos Mogador is named after the single vineyard that René Barbier started cultivating in the 1970s, in the now world-famous village of Gratallops. The wines of Clos Mogador have now become mythical wines, just like Sassicaia from Italy and Château Margaux from France. Clos Mogador has the cult status of a great world wine. A special feature in wine making at René Barbier: he presses the grapes using an olive oil press, which produces only half of the grape juice (unlike a normal press). This makes the wine 50% more concentrated and appears almost liqueur in the glass. Priorat wines are naturally quite concentrated, and yields are usually microscopic. Robert Parker was one of the first international journalists to give the wines of Clos Mogador additional praise. and the wines of Rene Barbier and Sara Perez (Rene's wife) are now a household name.

In addition to the Clos Mogador, his wife, the famous winemaker Sara Pérez, makes wines in the Montsant (the region around the Priorat) from the winery La Universal and Mas Martinet. These wines such as Clos Martinet, Venus and Dido are now also among Spain's best wines.
