The 2022 La Mondotte is a powerful and impressively concentrated wine. Dark, inky fruit, gravel, pencil shavings, iron, sage and scorched earth give it an intense, brooding presence with serious character. This structured Saint-Émilion requires patience and will take a few years to fully develop. The blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc – a little more Franc than in some recent vintages. The wine is macerated for 35 days and then matured for 16 months in French oak, 40% of which is new. A standout vintage, from one of the appellation’s most characterful vineyards.

A series of great vintages have helped La Mondotte rise from an unranked position straight to the Premier Grand Cru Classé (B) in the 2012 Saint Emilion classification, heralding the birth of a new iconic Bordeaux. La Mondotte’s vines average 50 years old, on the limestone slopes above Pavie Decesse, and produce fewer than 10,000 bottles per year.

  • Slow-cooked beef cheeks with red wine, carrot and celeriac puree
The long braised meat brings out the depth and structure of the wine. The earthy notes of celeriac perfectly match the irony character of the wine.

  • Rack of lamb with rosemary, garlic and roasted parsnips
The combination of lamb with spicy and sweet elements accentuates the powerful fruitiness and spicy structure of the wine.

  • Risotto with mushrooms, pecorino and sage
The earthy notes of mushrooms enhance the mineral and earthy undertones of La Mondotte, while the creamy texture contrasts with the tannic structure.

  • Roasted duck with cherry compote and wild spinach
Duck and red fruit are a classic pairing with Merlot-dominated blends. The bitterness of spinach adds extra tension to the whole.

  • Ravioli filled with braised wild boar neck, black garlic and sage butter
The combination of game and black garlic brings out the dark, sultry character of the wine, while the sage enhances the spiciness.

  • Matured duck liver on toasted brioche bread with cocoa nibs and black figs
The creaminess and fat content of foie gras are beautifully cut by the structure and tension in the wine. The subtle bitterness of cocoa makes it layered and surprising.

La Mondotte's roots date back to the 19th century, but although much of the current vineyard was planted before the First World War, the estate as it is known today was born from a much more recent history. Château La Mondotte was bought by the Neipperg family in 1971, at the same time as neighboring Canon-La-Gaffelière, and remained in the shadows until the mid-1990s when Stephan von Neipperg embarked on an extreme makeover: a new château, winemaking facilities and special cellars.

With the help of renowned oenologist Stephane Derenoncourt, yields were reduced, new oak was introduced, the fertile clay-limestone terroir was fully exploited and the 1996 vintage (released simply as La Mondotte, heralding a new start for the estate) received with enormous critical acclaim. A string of great vintages since then have helped La Mondotte rise from an unranked position straight to the Premier Grand Cru Classé (B) in the 2012 Saint Emilion classification, heralding the birth of a new iconic Bordeaux. La Mondotte's vines are on average 50 years old, on the limestone slopes above Pavie Decesse, and produce fewer than 10,000 bottles per year.
