Description
Kistler Vineyards is a small family winery in the Russian River Valley. They specialize in producing Burgundy-style Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines. The winery was founded in 1978 by the Kistler family. They own some of the best vineyards in Napa and Sonoma, including Dutton Ranch (Russian River Valley) in Western Sonoma County.
Named after roasted hazelnuts, this is the most expressive Chardonnay from Kistler Vineyards. The Chardonnay wines from Kistler are produced according to the French example. The wines are fully fermented in barriques, using both native and cultivated yeasts. After malolactic fermentation, the wines remain on their 'lees' (fine sediment) and are matured in French oak barriques (50% new). After 12-18 months of maturation, the wines are bottled without filtration or clarification. The Kistler Chardonnay Les Noisetiers is named after roasted hazelnuts, this is the most expressive Chardonnay from Kistler Vineyards. The right balance between citrus fruit and freshness. A lively yet elegant finish. The wine has a beautiful, full color with an intense nose, with fresh fruit (pear), hazelnut, vanilla, butter, honey and other creamy aromas from fermentation and maturation on wood. In the mouth full of structure, silky soft on the tongue, oily but also fresh and juicy, with well integrated wood in the long finish. This kind of fine wines certainly not to serve too cold. We advise 12°C.
This powerful wine with ripe aromas calls for similar dishes: sole fried in butter with almonds, Bresse chicken with truffle and foie gras, veal kidneys fried pink with 'moutarde à l'ancienne' cream sauce, turbot or brill with a creamy butter/white wine sauce, monkfish ham with beurre blanc, lobster with vanilla butter
Robert Parker, Wine Advocate “ ...Steve Kistler and his partner, Mark Bixler, are at the top of their game, making world-class Chardonnays of remarkable consistency .”

Aromas of dried peaches, caramel, honeysuckle, kiwis and lemon curd with hints of flint. Medium- to full-bodied with phenolic tension that tightens the wine in the finish. So long and beautiful. Hints of smoke. Reserved. Give this three or four years to open. Try after 2027.

From: 2022 Sonoma: A First Look (Jan 2024)
The 2022 Chardonnay Les Noisetiers is a class. Aromatic, silky and refined, the Noisetiers is a superb appellation-level wine. Lemon confit, marzipan, tangerine peel and exotic floral overtones give this soft, mid-weight Chardonnay tons of charm. This is a gorgeous edition of the Noisetiers.

This is a superb set of new releases from Kistler. Readers will find wines that express the essence of site, which, in my view, is always the most important attribute for vineyard-designate wines.
Longtime winemaker Jason Kesner describes the 2022 growing season as having had more rain than the year prior. Warm weather in the early part of the year led to an early bud break. The rest of the growing season was rather mild. Harvest began in mid-August, as was the case at many properties. Longtime Kistler fans should take note of the new Chardonnay Stock Ranch, which is terrific in its debut vintage. This year I also tasted the appellation bottlings, wines that are mostly directed at restaurants.

Kistler's production
Kistler is best known for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noirs, which consistently receive high scores and critical acclaim. The winery produces a range of single-vineyard Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, often named after the vineyard the grapes come from. Some of the well-known vineyards Kistler works with include Dutton Ranch, Hudson Vineyard and Cuvee Cathleen. Kistler follows a winemaking philosophy with minimal intervention, with the aim of bringing out the natural qualities of the grapes and the vineyard in the wines. They use traditional winemaking techniques and often ferment their wines with native yeasts. Kistler wines are produced in relatively small quantities, making them highly sought after by collectors and wine enthusiasts. The limited production contributes to their exclusivity. In recent years, the winery has transitioned to using biodynamic farming methods in some of its vineyards. This holistic approach to farming aims to improve the health and vitality of the vineyards and grapes.
