Description
The Julien Schaal Mountain Vineyards Pinot Noir 2021 is an elegant 'French' pinot noir with some wood aging. The grapes were hand-harvested at optimum ripeness and sorted in the cellar to ensure only the best fruit was used for fermentation. Part was fermented as whole berries. The wine is naturally fermented and matured in barrel (300L) for 12 months. The Mountain Vineyards Pinot Noir has a beautiful typical bright ruby red color in the glass. The nose has delicate earthy aromas combined with red and dark berry aromas. In the mouth these characteristics follow with interesting savoury notes and just a hint of oak in the finish.

Platter’s ****(*) 90/100
From Elgin & Upper Hemel-en-Aarde vines, 2018 has voluptuous marmalade fruit, racy acidity ensuring balance. Fine body & texture promise improvement with few years cellaring. Wild yeasts for all; portion fermented in tank for the whites.
“Bright fruit. Pure and pretty young. Very bright. Very successful! ”
Jancis Robinson MW
“Densely packed, juicy and alive, with a captivating mineral underpinning to the citrus and stone fruit flavors”
Stephen Tanzer – VINOUS
“Lime and grapefruit underpin what appears to be serious, brooding wine. This is followed by sweet melon, sweet and sour plums and tout saline acidity”
Greg Sherwood MW – DECANTER

Julien Schaal is an entrepreneur from Alsace. In October he makes riesling in France and in February/March chardonnay in South Africa. He learned the intricacies of the South African terroir from the Newton Johnson's and Paul Cluver.
His wines are beautifully pure and have French elegance. All the grapes come from the cooler areas, Walker Bay and especially Elgin. The grapes come from rented blocks selected by him and processed according to his standards and values. In practice, this is as organic as possible, 100% organic in good years. Harvesting is done by hand and by a permanent team of people.
