The 2022 Jean-Claude Ramonet Montrachet Grand Cru belongs to the absolute pinnacle of global viticulture. This legendary Grand Cru from Montrachet embodies everything great white Burgundy is known for: unprecedented finesse, monumental depth, and virtually endless aging potential. With a plot of just 0.26 hectares, Domaine Jean-Claude Ramonet produces one of the most sought-after and rare Chardonnays in the world.

Domaine Jean-Claude Ramonet

Domaine Jean-Claude Ramonet has belonged to the absolute elite of the Côte de Beaune for generations. The estate from Chassagne-Montrachet enjoys an almost mythical reputation thanks to its uncompromising approach in both the vineyard and the cellar. Low yields, manual harvesting, and extremely precise vinification ensure that each terroir fully retains its own character.

Ramonet is known for white Burgundies that combine power and richness with exceptional tension and precision. It is precisely this combination that makes the estate's wines among the most sought-after in Burgundy and established references within the Chassagne-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, and, of course, Montrachet appellations.

Montrachet Grand Cru: the most famous Chardonnay terroir in the world

Montrachet is widely regarded as the greatest terroir for Chardonnay. The combination of calcareous soils with reddish-brown marl, the perfect east- to southeast exposure, and an exceptional microclimate produces wines that are unmatched anywhere else in the world.

The Domaine Ramonet plot was acquired in 1978 and covers only 0.26 hectares. Its extremely limited size makes every vintage particularly scarce. It is precisely on this unique terroir that the unprecedented combination of concentration, refinement, minerality, and length emerges that has made Montrachet world-famous.

Vinification and aging

The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand at optimal ripeness and gently pressed to preserve maximum finesse. Fermentation takes place with natural yeasts in carefully selected French oak barrels. Subsequently, the wine ages in barrels for 18 to 24 months, with only minimal intervention so that the terroir is fully expressed.

During the first months of aging, the wine undergoes regular bâtonnage, creating extra texture and complexity without losing its natural freshness or minerality.

Scent, taste and character

The 2022 Montrachet Grand Cru opens with an impressively layered bouquet of white flowers, citrus zest, and wet limestone. This is followed by refined aromas of acacia honey, roasted hazelnuts, brioche, and subtle spices that continue to develop.

On the palate, the wine immediately displays its monumental class. The concentration is impressive, yet at the same time, the wine possesses an almost weightless elegance. Ripe citrus, white peach, stone fruit, and refined wood notes are supported by an exceptional mineral tension that keeps the wine constantly fresh and lively.

What makes this Montrachet truly unique is the perfect balance between power and finesse. The wine possesses enormous depth and extract, yet remains crystal clear, refined, and harmonious. Every sip reveals new layers of fruit, chalk, spices, and subtle toast notes.

The finish seems to go on endlessly, developing for minutes with nuances of citrus, honey, flint, brioche, and refined spices. With further bottle aging, aromas of truffle, dried fruit, and exotic spices will further develop.

A wine for multiple generations

Great Montrachet is one of the longest-lasting white wines in the world. The combination of exceptional concentration, natural acidity, and mineral structure ensures that this wine continues to develop for decades. While it impresses primarily with energy and precision in its youth, after many years of bottle aging it will develop increasingly complex aromas without losing its freshness.

The 2022 Jean-Claude Ramonet Montrachet Grand Cru undoubtedly belongs to the iconic white wines of its generation and is an absolute reference for both collectors and enthusiasts.

Drinking window and food and wine pairings

The 2022 Jean-Claude Ramonet Montrachet Grand Cru possesses exceptional aging potential and can continue to develop for 25 to over 50 years. Although the wine is impressive even when young, it will achieve unprecedented complexity with prolonged bottle aging.

Preferably serve this wine at 11 to 13°C.

This Grand Cru is a perfect accompaniment to Lobster Thermidor, turbot with truffle sauce, caviar, foie gras, langoustine, scallops, and aged Comté. Even with the most refined gastronomic preparations, the wine effortlessly retains its elegance and intensity.

Noël and Jean-Claude Ramonet are the third generation to manage the grand winery of Ramonet, with the mission of maintaining its wonderfully built reputation. Grandfather Pierre is said to have arrived in Burgundy in the late 1920s with nothing more than his knapsack. After years of buying grapes and making wine from them, he was gradually able to buy vineyards in his chosen village of Chassagne. The ultimate highlight in 1978 was the purchase of a plot of land from Le Montrachet, and paid in cash too!

Pierre Ramonet died in 1994 at the age of 88. But its echo lives in the wines, in the capable hands of his grandsons Noël and Jean-Claude who have continued its reputation since 1984 (under the strict command of the grandfather). The original Ramonets came from Bresse on the other side of the Saône from Chalon. In the 19th century, a branch settled in Beaune, where they were millers. The mill went bankrupt and one of them, Claude, moved to Chassagne, where he became a Tacheron, a vineyard worker who is paid by the amount of land he farms. Claude had three children; a daughter who married Georges Bachelet (hence the current domain Bachelet-Ramonet) and two sons, Pierre, born in 1906 and Claude (1914). Pierre married Lucie Prudhon (for a time the wine was sold as Domaine Ramonet-Prudhon). They had only one son, André (1934), father of Noël and Jean-Claude.

Today they own 17 hectares. In the Chassagne the very beautiful premiers crus Ruchottes, Morgeots, Caillerets, Clos-de-la-Boudriotte, Clos-Saint-Jean, Chaumées and Vergers, but also Bâtard and Bienvenues. Recently, Ramonet has been able to expand in Saint-Aubin (Les Charmois) and Puligny-Montrachet (Champ-Canet and a very beautiful villages). The average age of the vines is 60 years and the yields per hectare are very low. Depending on the quality, the wines are aged between 12 and 15 months in a mix of new and used oak barrels (generally 30% new oak). Long maturation on the yeast tracks, light filtering and only occasional batonnage. The Ramonet brothers have remained true winegrowers, just like their grandfather, but the distribution of their wines is being fought over the world. In theory, Noël is responsible for the wine cellars and Jean Claude for the vineyards.
