the story of inglenook
Inglenook is one of Napa Valley's most historic and prestigious estates. Founded in 1879 by Gustave Niebaum, it quickly gained an international reputation. Under the leadership of Francis Ford Coppola and with the expertise of winery director Philippe Bascaules, Inglenook is once again an icon. Rubicon, first produced in 1978, is considered the estate's absolute flagship cuvée, made from the estate's finest parcels. It's a wine that keeps Inglenook's legacy alive and is beloved by collectors worldwide.
the terroir of Rutherford
Rubicon's vineyards are located on the renowned Rutherford Bench, a terroir renowned for its balance of power and finesse. The soils consist of gravel, clay, and alluvial deposits, which ensure optimal drainage and complexity in the wines. The Mediterranean climate, combined with cooling influences from the Bay, produces grapes that perfectly combine ripeness and freshness. It is this unique terroir that gives Rubicon its signature elegance and depth.
the grapes and the 2022 harvest
The 2022 Rubicon is composed of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6.5% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 2.5% Petit Verdot. The growing season began with beneficial rainfall but ultimately proved drier than expected. Thanks to the autumn rains of 2021 and a warm spring, the vineyard developed healthy and vigorous canopies, which ensured balanced ripening. Harvest began on September 1st with Merlot and concluded in late September with Cabernet Sauvignon from the Cohn plots. The grapes produced a wine with remarkable balance and aromatic layering.
vinification and maturation
After being hand-harvested, the grapes were carefully selected and vinified in small batches. The wine matured for 18 months in French oak barrels, 75% new and 25% neutral. This maturation enhances the structure and complexity, while retaining the fruity elegance so characteristic of Rubicon. The wine was bottled in July 2024, making the 2022 vintage ready to take its place in the long line of legendary Rubicons.
color, smell and taste
The 2022 Rubicon boasts a deep ruby red color. The bouquet opens with aromas of black cherry, red currant, and floral accents, framed by cedarwood, earthy notes, and subtle spice. Inglenook's tasting notes describe additional layers of black cherry and baking spices, reminiscent of black forest cake. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, refined, and slightly lighter in style than in previous vintages. Silky tannins provide grip, while the finish remains long, fresh, and elegant. The Wine Advocate highlighted the red fruit expression, vibrant freshness, and refined structure, advising decanting young for optimal expression.
reviews and storage potential
The Wine Advocate awarded the 2022 Rubicon 95 points, praising its balance, elegance, and aromatic complexity. The wine combines refinement with structure and has impressive aging potential. The ideal drinking window is between 2025 and 2045, during which time the wine will evolve from youthful freshness to a more complex and layered expression. Rubicon is internationally recognized as one of the most refined interpretations of Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley and remains a benchmark for the region.

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Rubicon is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. It's turned out to be a more red-fruited year, with notes of cherries and redcurrants accented by cedar, dusty earth and some tarry, reductive notes (decant for a couple of hours if opening one in the next couple of years). In the mouth, it's medium- to full-bodied and on the leaner side, with silky tannins and a bright, fresh, lingering finish.
Francis Ford Coppola's palatial wine estate is a reminder of Napa Valley's first golden age, yet the property has been updated in nearly every way imaginable. Replanting to replaced virused vines continues apace, phased in so as to not unduly disrupt production. The new cave-winery was completed in time for the 2022 harvest, which started September 1 and wrapped up by the end of the month. Some of the vineyard blocks have overhead sprinklers—primarily for frost protection, but they were pressed into service to moderate temperatures—and harvesting continued right through the heat.
During our tasting at the estate, winemaker Jonathan Tyer compared the two main red wines: "Rubicon is the best expression of the Rutherford Bench—behind the house—while the Cab is the best expression of the entire estate. Rubicon tends to be extremely refined and balanced—density and structure but still elegance and balance. The Cab, once you start blending in the heavier soils, the wines tend to be more powerful and the tannins are more coarse."
The samples of the 2023 wines—expected to be bottled in May 2025—were even more impressive. Following a cold, wet winter and a late bud break, harvest started October 3 and finished October 25, the latest Tyer has seen at the property. "It was perfect," he said. "We had a nice, long growing season." Tyer is also enthusiastic about the 2024s.
Although produced in smaller volumes, don't overlook the white wines here. The Sauvignon Blanc comes from the front of property, the rows closest to Highway 29. Planted in 2011 to six different clones, Tyer is partial to Clone 530, which he says is bright and tropical, while still holding on to its acidity. The Rhône whites for Blancaneaux—Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne—are grown in hillier western sections of the property.
Only light press goes into the white wines, with Tyer and his team carefully watching pH and phenolics at pressing. Fermentation and maturation is in a mix of oak puncheons and stainless steel drums, with about 25% new French oak for Blancaneaux and only 18% for the Sauvignon Blanc. The whites then spend six to eight months on the lees, building texture to balance the crisp, natural acidity.

This top wine from Inglenook offers complex, perfumed aromas, lots of dark fruit flavors and a structured but velvety texture. Spearmint, black cherries and balsam on the nose, then black cherries, dried blueberries and raspberries on the palate, Touches of savory herbs, iron and black olives complement the juicy, gorgeous fruit flavors. The tannins are full but very rounded and fine-grained. Contains 85% cabernet sauvignon plus smaller amounts of merlot, cabernet franc and petit verdot. Drinkable now, but best from 2030.

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Rubicon shows a bit more depth, power and tannin than the Cabernet Sauvignon. It, too, is still coming together in barrel and needs to flesh out a bit more. Even so, I expect this will be a relatively light vintage of Rubicon.

Inglenook is a famous winery located in California and is known as one of the best wineries in the whole world. The Inglenook winery is 130 years old and has produced only quality wines over the years. To illustrate the high quality of this winery, a nice quote from Gustave Niebaum from 1890 can be used: "I do not intend to make money from my vineyards by producing a lot of cheap wine. I want to make a California wine that is sought after by connoisseurs and can be just as high a price as wines from France, Germany or Spain and I am willing to spend all my money for this result ".
The current production of the domain Inglenook reassembles the production that the wine domain had in its 'Golden era' under the direction of John Daniel. Since Francis Ford Coppola bought the estate, the institution has been the same as it was between 1934 and 1964, pride is above profit and pride is certainly there. The wines made at Inglenook are among the best wines in the world and each year the wines receive high ratings from wine connoisseurs. The organic growing methods used by John Daniel are now being used again, so contraceptives are no longer used to protect the Inglenook vineyards and high quality grapes are being grown again, such as the Cabernet Sauvignon, the Petit Verdot and the Cabernet Franc.
