2022 Frédéric Cossard Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières is one of Frédéric Cossard's most refined white Burgundies. Hailing from the famous Premier Cru Les Folatières, this wine is considered a textbook example of the finesse, tension, and minerality that make Puligny-Montrachet one of the most prestigious Chardonnay appellations worldwide. Like all Cossard wines, this cuvée is made with minimal intervention, allowing the terroir and vintage to fully come into their own.

For many years, Frédéric Cossard has been one of the most influential winemakers within the natural wine movement in Burgundy. His estate originated from his renowned wine merchant Caves de Pyrène, after which he focused entirely on producing terroir-driven Burgundies. The vineyards are cultivated organically, with a strong emphasis on biodiversity and healthy soils. In the cellar, Cossard opts for an extremely natural approach, featuring spontaneous fermentation, minimal additives, and a very restrained use of sulfur. The result is lively, pure, and expressive wines that are highly regarded internationally.

The Folatières

Les Folatières is one of the largest and most prestigious Premier Cru vineyards in Puligny-Montrachet. The name refers to the light mists and air currents that regularly seem to hover above the slopes. The chalky soils and perfect exposure produce Chardonnay with an exceptional combination of power, tension, and refinement. Many wine lovers consider Les Folatières to be the Premier Cru that comes closest to the great Grand Crus of Puligny-Montrachet.

Vineyard and vinification

The grapes are harvested entirely by hand and carefully selected. Fermentation proceeds spontaneously with natural yeasts. The wine then ages in French oak barrels, using only a limited proportion of new wood so that the expression of the terroir remains central. The wine is bottled without excessive intervention, allowing it to retain its natural tension, texture, and minerality.

Scent, taste and character

On the nose, the wine displays refined aromas of white peach, citrus, lime, ripe apple, and white flowers, complemented by subtle notes of hazelnut, wet limestone, and a light reductive minerality typical of great Puligny-Montrachet.

The taste is intense and crystal clear, with a beautiful balance between ripe fruit, lively acidity, and pronounced chalky minerality.
