Log inThe Fontodi 'Flaccianello della Pieve' is vinified from 100% Sangiovese grapes from the estate's oldest plots, which have undergone rigorous selection. There are 6,000 vines per hectare, pruned according to the Guyot method. The wine was fermented in stainless steel, a process that proceeded naturally without the addition of foreign yeasts. Malolactic fermentation took place in barriques. For the aging, which lasted 18 months, new barriques made of Allier and Troncais oak were chosen. A fresh and penetrating wine. The aromas of various dark fruits intensify as the wine is aged. It has excellent length, is warm and pure, and offers excellent balance. It has excellent potential. The Flaccianello has a ruby red color with intense fruity aromas of plums and cherries, violets, and vanilla. Its soft tannins give it a full and juicy flavor. The finish is complex with impressions of cocoa, tobacco and fruit.
Renowned wine critics like Robert Parker and Antonio Galloni stumble over superlatives to describe this Flaccianello della Pieve. And rightly so, because it's an impressive wine that effortlessly meets all the criteria of balance, length, intensity, and complexity. Seductively rich in flavors, velvety smooth on the palate yet never too heavy. Every sip leaves you wanting more, and that's exactly what Manetti and his team envisioned with this masterful creation. Only a few bottles are produced annually, and demand is high, so seize this opportunity to own this iconic Chianti wine. It can easily age for decades, should you be willing to resist the urge to open it.

Another icon from Tuscany is the Fontodi 2022 Flaccianello della Pieve. This organic wine is beautiful, quite bold and thickly extracted. Across the board, these wines from the 2022 vintage made by Fontodi all show high alcohol and a rather robust character, and the same goes for the Flaccianello, whose alcohol content is 15%. This vintage is more accessible overall, with finely tuned tannins. This wine represents a selection of the best estate fruit at various elevations with both alberese limestone soils and galestro shale. Production is 60,000 bottles.

From: Chianti Classico: Riding Out the Storm (Jul 2025)
The 2022 Flaccianello della Pieve is a rather quiet wine in this vintage. The vineyard mix is a bit different than in the recent past, as hail damaged one of the three core vineyards Fontodi uses for Flaccianello. Instead, the winery used parcels across the street from the winery that were used for Flaccianello from 1981 to 2000, before they were replanted. Dark Sangiovese fruit, spice, new leather, menthol and incense are nicely laced together. Overall, the 2022 feels a bit lithe. I have seen Flaccianello blossom with time in bottle. That could very well be the case here. Sadly, production is down by 40%.
- By Antonio Galloni, July 2025
The 2022s at Fontodi are more than worthy follow-ups to the 2021. Proprietor Giovanni Manetti describes 2022 as a year with a wet winter and naturally low yields on the vine going into the more critical summer months. “We lost the entire western portion of our estate, which accounts for 25-30% of our total production,” Manetti reported in describing the effects of the August 15 storm that ripped through parts of Panzano. Manetti was among the producers who opted to pick a touch early rather than risk wines with excessively high sugars. As a result, the wines are a bit shy today and a bit more reticent than they can be. Lighter extractions and a gradual move towards larger format oak are among the stylistic choices that have also given these wines a bit more energy than in the recent past. I was reminded of that when I tasted the 2015 Flaccianello after the current releases. The 2015 remains quite young and just as striking as it has always been. At the same time, the stylistic evolution here over last decade is impossible to miss.

The Azienda Agricola Fontodi is located in the heart of the Chianti Classico area, south of the town of Panzano. This region has been famous for viticulture for centuries, thanks to the unique combination of elevated cultivation areas, lime and loam soil, lots of sun hours and the fantastic microclimate: warm and dry and with a big difference between day and night temperature.
Fontodi has been in the possession of the Manetti family since 1968, who is advised by the renowned oenologist Franco Bernabei. The Fontodi winery now has an organic certificate and is 130 ha. large, of which about 70 are planted with grapes. In the center of the winery grows the Sangiovese, which Giovanni and Marco Manetti have developed to breathtaking perfection. There are also French grape varieties such as Pinot Noir, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. Just like so many big names at the top of wine growing, Fontodi has applied the fruitful combination between organic cultivation and the most modern cellar technology and has therefore become one of the most sustainable wineries in Tuscany. To date, Fontodi wines have brought in 19 times the coveted three glasses of the Italian wine bible Gambero Rosso. Fontodi is undisputedly one of the 10 best wineries in Tuscany! In the last 17 editions of the Gambero Rosso it has received a score of 'Tre Bicchieri' no less than 13 times. The highest possible.
