Description
The 2022 release from Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles brings finesse, minerality and subtlety in an exceptional Chardonnay.
Winery and region
Domaine Leflaive is located in the village of Puligny-Montrachet in the Côte de Beaune (Burgundy, France), an internationally recognized region for white Chardonnay wines. The estate's history dates back to the early 20th century, when Joseph Leflaive acquired his first vineyard in 1905. Since the 1990s, the estate has embraced biodynamic viticulture under the direction of Anne-Claude Leflaive; today, it is managed by Brice de la Morandière. The focus is entirely on high-quality white wine, exclusively Chardonnay, sourced from carefully selected plots on limestone and clay soils. The vineyards are often situated on mid-hill slopes with excellent drainage and exposure, combining authenticity, concentration, and elegance. Domaine Leflaive owns several Grand Cru plots and several Premier Cru sites, including Les Pucelles.
The wine 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles
The 2022 Les Pucelles from Domaine Leflaive is a Chardonnay from the premier cru location of Les Pucelles, a suggestive sub-region in Puligny-Montrachet that often leans towards its larger neighboring Grand Crus. This vintage benefits from the combination of warmer-than-average temperatures and a sunny season: the wine is therefore rich and concentrated, yet retains its characteristically refined profile. Professional reviews give it a high score (± 95 points) and describe it as taut, vital, and with impressive minerality.
Grapes, harvest, vinification and aging
The grapes are harvested by hand, carefully selected, and 100% Chardonnay. The soil of Les Pucelles consists of limestone-claystone, light and with little water enrichment, ideal for low yields and concentrated root development. In 2022, the harvest began relatively early due to the warm spring and summer season. In the cellar, the work is carried out with respect for the terroir: gentle pneumatic pressing, static clarification for 24 hours, followed by stainless steel or oak fermentation. New oak is used in part of the barrels (varying depending on the plot), and the wine is aged for approximately 18 months, part of which in oak. The result is a wine that is both pure and layered thanks to minimal intervention and extended aging.
Color, odor and flavor profile
In the glass, the 2022 Les Pucelles reveals a bright golden yellow with subtle green highlights, a sign of youthful freshness. The nose opens with white flowers, pear, citrus zest, and a pronounced minerality. Notes of ripe white peach, almond, and subtle smoky and nutty notes emerge, followed by hints of candied citrus peel and a light reductive note typical of the house. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with tight acidity that carries the whole. The profile is elegant and concentrated: white fruit, delicate almond notes, a salty mineral undertone, and a long, precise finish. External descriptions speak of "terrific palate density … brilliant drinking ahead" and "pure, enveloping, lively acids and a long, precise finish."
This is a magnum edition in OWC/1 - Even tastier, more festive and with a longer drinking window.
Development and cellar potential
Although the 2022 vintage is still young, this wine possesses the potential to mature and develop further over a period of 10 to 15 years or longer, under optimal storage conditions. For the serious connoisseur, this is a wine that already intrigues with its sharpness and minerality, but which will become even more complex in the coming years, with tertiary aromas of honey, jasmine, hazelnut, and soft oxidative notes. It will be fascinating to watch its development, how refinement and depth unfold step by step.
Why Domaine Leflaive and this wine are special
Domaine Leflaive ranks among the absolute top white Burgundy producers. Through its own plots in Puligny-Montrachet, a strict selection policy, and very low yields, the estate has built a consistently exceptional reputation. Les Pucelles is a unique terroir that, in its prime, rivals the Grand Crus in the area. The combination of terroir, biodynamic approach, and the estate's historical significance makes this wine an investment in flavor, balance, and future value. For the serious wine consumer or sommelier, the 2022 Les Pucelles is not an everyday choice, but a well-considered choice for a wine with character that can impress both now and in the future.

The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles reasserts its traditional role as Leflaive's dominant premier cru this year, wafting from the glass with aromas of pear, clear honey, white flowers and orange oil, framed by a deft touch of youthful reduction. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless, it's pure and enveloping, with a sweet core of fruit, lively acids and a long, precise finish.
The 2022 vintage has turned out very nicely at Domaine Leflaive. Picking decisions at this address in recent years, under the direction of Pierre Vincent, have tended to privilege freshness, and a couple of wines appeared to have been picked a little on the early side if one's tastes lean toward the texture and plenitude that only full maturity can impart; but overall, this is a strong vintage that is developing a touch of noble reduction in bottle and which is going to age with grace. As usual, élevage began with a year in barrel (from a variety of coopers, including Séguin Moreau and Chassin) followed by six months or so in tank on the lees before bottling under Diam 30.

Domaine Leflaive in Puligny-Montrachet is a name that rings a bell. Chardonnay, tradition and progress come together beautifully here.
History of Domaine Leflaive
The story of Domaine Leflaive begins in the 18th century but truly takes shape in the twentieth. Joseph Leflaive, a former marine engineer, took over the family estate in 1905. After the phylloxera crisis he bought additional plots, replanted the vineyards, and started bottling under his own label. That laid the foundation for the estate as we know it today.
After his death in 1953, his sons Vincent and Jo took the lead. They strengthened the name both in Burgundy and abroad. In the 1990s Anne-Claude Leflaive stepped in. She made a bold move by converting the estate entirely to biodynamic farming. Since 2015, Brice de la Morandière, Anne-Claude’s nephew, has been in charge. He combines respect for tradition with innovations such as the sustainable cellar built in 2012.
Location in Puligny-Montrachet
Domaine Leflaive is located in the heart of Puligny-Montrachet, a small village in the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy. This region is known worldwide as the birthplace of Chardonnay. The limestone-rich soil and perfect exposure create wines with tension, freshness, and depth. Here everything revolves around terroir: small differences in slope or soil type give wines with their own unique character.
Grape varieties at Domaine Leflaive
The focus is entirely on Chardonnay. No red wine is made. That may sound limited, but this dedication is exactly what made the estate great. From a simple Bourgogne Blanc to the most legendary Grand Crus: all come from the same grape, yet from different parcels. This way you taste the pure differences between soil and location.
Specialities and famous vineyards
Domaine Leflaive owns parcels in some of the most prestigious vineyards in the world. Think Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, and Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. In addition, there are impressive Premier Crus such as Les Pucelles, Clavoillon, and Les Folatières. They also make a distinctive Meursault and an approachable Bourgogne Blanc. The latter comes from vineyards just outside Puligny and shows that even the entry-level wines at Leflaive carry plenty of character.
Biodynamic viticulture and cellar techniques
Since 1997 Domaine Leflaive has worked fully biodynamically. That means using natural preparations and following the rhythms of nature. No artificial chemicals, but full attention to the health of the soil. In the cellar the approach is patient: slow pressing, fermentations with minimal intervention, one year of ageing in oak barrels followed by six months in neutral vats. Since 2012 this has taken place in a remarkable cellar known as the ‘Egg Cellar’. This round building, insulated with straw and wood, is energy-efficient and designed to let the wines mature perfectly.
Interesting facts about Domaine Leflaive
- Before becoming a winegrower, Joseph Leflaive helped build the first French submarine.
- The estate’s Grand Cru Montrachet is only released after ten years of ageing in the cellar, so it can show its full complexity.
- Anne-Claude Leflaive received international acclaim as a pioneer in biodynamics and was awarded several prizes for her contribution.
