Description
History of Domaine Leflaive
Domaine Leflaive ranks among the absolute top of Burgundy and is known worldwide as a benchmark for white wine. Since the early twentieth century, the Leflaive family has had its home in Puligny-Montrachet, where generations have cultivated with respect for nature and terroir. Under the leadership of Anne-Claude Leflaive, the estate became fully biodynamic in the 1990s. Today, Brice de la Morandière is at the helm, with winemaker Pierre Vincent in charge of the cellar. Their collaborative approach emphasizes precision, freshness, and purity – characteristics clearly evident in the wines of recent vintages.
Location and terroir of Meursault Sous le Dos d'Ane
The Premier Cru Sous le Dos d'Ane is located in the south of Meursault, bordering Pierre Morey's renowned Meursault Perrières vineyard. Formerly planted with Pinot Noir, Domaine Leflaive replanted the plot with Chardonnay. The soil is particularly stony and chalky, resulting in lively acidity and a pronounced minerality. The vines occupy a 1.62-hectare plot and benefit from an eastern exposure, which produces ripe yet fresh grapes. The terroir gives this wine its characteristic combination of finesse, tension, and length.
Biodynamic viticulture
All of Domaine Leflaive's vineyards are farmed biodynamically. This means no chemicals or fertilizers are used and the soil's natural cycle is central. The vines are tended by hand, and harvesting takes place at the precise moment of ripeness to maintain balance and freshness. The biodynamic approach enhances the wine's vitality and ensures the pure expression of the terroir—a key characteristic of Leflaive wines.
Vinification and maturation
The 2022 Meursault 1er Cru Sous le Dos d'Ane was hand-harvested and carefully sorted. The grapes were gently pressed, and the juice fermented in oak barrels from various coopers, including Séguin Moreau and Chassin. Approximately 22 percent of the barrels were new. After a year of aging in wood, a further six months were spent on the fine lees in stainless steel, which added tension and precision. The wine was bottled under a Diam 30 closure to ensure purity and stability. The result is a wine that exemplarily combines power and refinement.
Assessment and character
According to international tasters, Domaine Leflaive's 2022 vintage was a resounding success. The harvest decisions, led by Pierre Vincent, prioritized freshness, resulting in pure and energetic wines with great precision. The Wine Advocate awarded this wine a score of 92+ points and described it as a "Meursault that displays aromas of pear, white flowers, freshly baked bread, and a light reduction, followed by a medium to full body with a clean, precise structure and a chalky finish." This description perfectly captures the wine's essence: elegant, mineral, and complex, with a subtle smoky edge that adds to its depth.
Color, smell and taste
The 2022 Sous le Dos d'Ane reveals a light golden hue with shimmering reflections in the glass. The nose is refined and expressive, with notes of ripe pear, white flowers, citrus zest, and a hint of toasted bread. After some time in the glass, a subtle reductive note emerges, characteristic of young Leflaive wines. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied to full-bodied, with a silky texture, lively tension, and elegant minerality. The finish is long and chalky, with a precise balance of fruit and acidity. The wine combines the power of Meursault with the refinement of Puligny—a harmony typical of the house's style.
Storage potential
The wine is already impressive in its youthful precision, but will continue to develop between 2027 and 2050. With a few years of bottle aging, it will gain more depth, nutty notes, and layering. Thanks to its structure, tension, and natural balance, this wine will age gracefully, retaining its energy and vibrancy.

2027 - 2050
The 2022 Meursault 1er Cru Sous le Dos d'Ane exhibits aromas of pear, white flowers, freshly baked bread and stuck match, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and racy palate that's pure and precise, concluding with a chalky finish. As readers may remember, this parcel, formerly planted to red, abuts Pierre Morey's Meursault Perrières, and the soils are very stony.
The 2022 vintage has turned out very nicely at Domaine Leflaive. Picking decisions at this address in recent years, under the direction of Pierre Vincent, have tended to privilege freshness, and a couple of wines appeared to have been picked a little on the early side if one's tastes lean toward the texture and plenitude that only full maturity can impart; but overall, this is a strong vintage that is developing a touch of noble reduction in bottle and which is going to age with grace. As usual, élevage began with a year in barrel (from a variety of coopers, including Séguin Moreau and Chassin) followed by six months or so in tank on the lees before bottling under Diam 30.

The 2022 Meursault Sous Le Dos d'Ane 1er Cru is clean and precise on the nose with hazelnut and light fumé aromas. The bouquet is focused and gains intensity with aeration. The palate is fresh and saline, a little Puligny-like in terms of the green apples towards the brisk, sapid finish. Lovely.

Domaine Leflaive in Puligny-Montrachet is a name that rings a bell. Chardonnay, tradition and progress come together beautifully here.
History of Domaine Leflaive
The story of Domaine Leflaive begins in the 18th century but truly takes shape in the twentieth. Joseph Leflaive, a former marine engineer, took over the family estate in 1905. After the phylloxera crisis he bought additional plots, replanted the vineyards, and started bottling under his own label. That laid the foundation for the estate as we know it today.
After his death in 1953, his sons Vincent and Jo took the lead. They strengthened the name both in Burgundy and abroad. In the 1990s Anne-Claude Leflaive stepped in. She made a bold move by converting the estate entirely to biodynamic farming. Since 2015, Brice de la Morandière, Anne-Claude’s nephew, has been in charge. He combines respect for tradition with innovations such as the sustainable cellar built in 2012.
Location in Puligny-Montrachet
Domaine Leflaive is located in the heart of Puligny-Montrachet, a small village in the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy. This region is known worldwide as the birthplace of Chardonnay. The limestone-rich soil and perfect exposure create wines with tension, freshness, and depth. Here everything revolves around terroir: small differences in slope or soil type give wines with their own unique character.
Grape varieties at Domaine Leflaive
The focus is entirely on Chardonnay. No red wine is made. That may sound limited, but this dedication is exactly what made the estate great. From a simple Bourgogne Blanc to the most legendary Grand Crus: all come from the same grape, yet from different parcels. This way you taste the pure differences between soil and location.
Specialities and famous vineyards
Domaine Leflaive owns parcels in some of the most prestigious vineyards in the world. Think Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, and Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. In addition, there are impressive Premier Crus such as Les Pucelles, Clavoillon, and Les Folatières. They also make a distinctive Meursault and an approachable Bourgogne Blanc. The latter comes from vineyards just outside Puligny and shows that even the entry-level wines at Leflaive carry plenty of character.
Biodynamic viticulture and cellar techniques
Since 1997 Domaine Leflaive has worked fully biodynamically. That means using natural preparations and following the rhythms of nature. No artificial chemicals, but full attention to the health of the soil. In the cellar the approach is patient: slow pressing, fermentations with minimal intervention, one year of ageing in oak barrels followed by six months in neutral vats. Since 2012 this has taken place in a remarkable cellar known as the ‘Egg Cellar’. This round building, insulated with straw and wood, is energy-efficient and designed to let the wines mature perfectly.
Interesting facts about Domaine Leflaive
- Before becoming a winegrower, Joseph Leflaive helped build the first French submarine.
- The estate’s Grand Cru Montrachet is only released after ten years of ageing in the cellar, so it can show its full complexity.
- Anne-Claude Leflaive received international acclaim as a pioneer in biodynamics and was awarded several prizes for her contribution.
