Persoonlijke gegevens
2022 Domaine Belargus Ronceray is an impressive dry Chenin Blanc from vines planted within the famous Grand Cru appellation of Quarts de Chaume. Instead of a sweet wine, Domaine Belargus chooses to vinify these grapes entirely dry, allowing the unique schist terroir to express itself in a pure manner. The result is a wine with exceptional depth, tension, and impressive aging potential.
Domaine Belargus
Domaine Belargus belongs to the absolute elite of the Loire and has built up a cult status among Chenin Blanc enthusiasts in a short time. The estate was founded by Ivan Massonnat, who acquired some of the finest plots from Jo Pithon and Domaine Laffourcade. Today, Belargus owns over twenty hectares of exceptional vineyards in Anjou, Savennières, and Quarts de Chaume.
All vineyards are cultivated with organic certification, with biodynamic principles applied on many plots. The grapes are harvested entirely by hand, and each vineyard is vinified separately to allow the character of the terroir to speak as purely as possible. Belarus is now regarded as one of the most important producers of dry Chenin Blanc in the world.

Ronceray
Ronceray comes from old Chenin Blanc vines within the prestigious Quarts de Chaume appellation. While this estate is known almost exclusively for great noble sweet wines, Belargus chooses to vinify this plot entirely dry. This results in a wine that combines the enormous concentration and complexity of Quarts de Chaume with the tension and minerality of a dry Chenin Blanc.
The soils consist primarily of schist, a rock that retains heat exceptionally well and gives the wine its characteristic mineral precision. This terroir produces wines with exceptional depth, structure, and impressive longevity.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand in multiple selective picking passes. After gentle pressing, the must ferments spontaneously with natural yeasts. The wine then ages in large wooden foudres and 500-liter French oak barrels. This gentle aging process gives the wine extra texture and complexity, while the terroir remains fully in the foreground.
Scent, taste and character
The 2022 Ronceray opens with a complex bouquet of white flowers, ripe apple, Conference pear, and citrus, followed by notes of almond, white pepper, and a subtle reductive touch that adds extra tension.
On the palate, the wine is rich and silky, yet strikingly energetic. The concentrated fruit is supported by lively acidity and a pronounced mineral structure. The schist soil lends the wine an almost briny tension that contrasts beautifully with the ripe fruit notes.
The finish is long, refined, and slightly austere in its youth, with citrus, white herbs, minerality, and an impressive precision that lingers for minutes.
Drinking window and food and wine pairings
The 2022 Domaine Belargus Ronceray is already impressive, but develops optimally between 2025 and 2038.
Preferably serve the wine at 10 to 12°C.
Excellent with lobster, scallops, turbot, monkfish, poultry with creamy sauces, veal, mushroom risotto, aged goat cheese, and refined vegetarian dishes.

The 2022 Ronceray is derived from vines planted on the Quarts-de-Chaume appellation but vinified as dry white wine. It reveals a complex, deep bouquet with aromas of almonds, white flowers, orchard fruits and white pepper combined with a reductive character. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and satiny, it has a deep core of fruit that segues into a tense, gently austere finish. It's matured in foudres and 500-liter barrels.
This 24-hectare estate (of which 21 were planted) located in and around Saint-Lambert-du-Lattay produces excellent wines from different, excellent soils. To create Domaine Belargus, Ivan Massonnat bought the rest of Domaine Jo Pithon as well as a part of Domaine Lafforcade, a significant producer of Quarts-de-Chaume. Labeled organic, the estate produced Savennières, Quarts-de-Chaume and Anjou wines. Massonat and his team practice biodynamic methods in some parcels, harvesting by hand and vinifying in stainless vats, followed by élevage in used barrels, new barrels, demi-muids and foudres. The flagship is the Coteau des Treilles, a hillside that was resurrected in the late 1990s by Jo Pithon, facing south and overlooking the Layon River. Wines from this exceptional area are known for their depth, aroma and potential for graceful aging. The 2022s have turned out nicely here, with certain cuvées capturing the vintage's exotic aromas. Domaine Belargus is a reliable source of intense and pure wines, clearly reflecting their schist soils.

From: Loire Chenin: Dividing Lines (Oct 2023)
This is a blend of several plots from around the Quarts de Chaume and Chaume. There's a breadth here from the pudding stones, but there's still real tension and a bitter kick. There's a sense of oxidative bruised apple character from long aging in oak, and yet there's also a smoky reductive character from a long time on lees. It is intriguing, messing with your brain in a good way, providing yin and yang. Plentiful substance and richness. I really love this, but the 14.5% alcohol just loses its balance right on the finish line for which I'm so frustrated. Almost outstanding...Bring on next year...

Ivan Massonnat’s Belargus has arrived on the Anjou scene with a bang. A newcomer to the Loire Valley, Belargus is making waves with his modern approach to wine marketing and communication and his no-expense-spared, unapologetic interpretation of the Anjou terroir. He’s taken on the estate formerly owned by Jo Pithon, renamed it, and now has a collection of stellar Chenin vineyards from around the area known as Anjou Noir, a land of schist, including ten hectares across the Quarts de Chaume and Chaume Grand Crus. The vines are farmed biodynamically and hand-harvested over several picks before the fruit is whole bunch pressed and allowed to ferment naturally in 400-liter oak barrels. The wines are mainly dry, but as nature permits, botrytized sweet wines are also created, encouraged by the morning mists off the Layon, a tributary of the Loire River.
In 2018, some of the whites were a touch oaky due to new barrels, and while oak continues to play an important part in these wines, improved integration is evident. There’s no doubting the ambition here, but with only three vintages to go on, you have to be careful that you don’t declare it the next big thing just in case it’s the Emperor’s New Clothes, but the historic sites and the high quality of the wines seems to suggest this is the real deal. When it comes to current vintages, look to drink the 2020s before the 2019s. The 2019s are firm and powerful (no malolactic conversion occurred in 2019), whereas the 2020s are a lot more open. As a result, the domaine has decided to release the 2020s before the 2019s as a result.
