Description
Château Potensac is located on the Haut-Médoc soil in the Médoc. Although there are many Médoc wines with a higher quality than the Haut-Médoc's, Potensac is a striking example of this. This wine is also made by Michel Delon of Leoville las Cases in St. Julien. Due to the various extensions, the spireless church in the hamlet of Potensac is part of the domain.
The estate has been in the same family since time immemorial and has always been passed down through women. The current owner, Jean-Hubert Delon, inherited the estate from his paternal grandmother, Georgette Liquard. Although close to the river, Potensac is situated on a high piece of land in the northern Medoc. Due to this position, the site has been populated since ancient times. The name "Medoc" in fact comes from "medio aquae" which means "in the middle of the waters". Planted on the best quality soils in the Ordonnac district, the vineyards now extend over 60 hectares on a terroir where the typical characteristics of each grape variety are very clearly expressed and give the wine an excellent aging potential.
Always a highly recommended wine given the excellent price/quality is Chateau Potensac. This family estate is owned by the Delon family (Ch. Léoville Las Cases, Clos du Marquis, Ch.Nénin). The estates are managed with the same care and the same expertise and team. The vineyard of 61 ha is located on one of the highest points of the Northern Médoc with historic parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc dating from the twenties and thirties.
Grape varieties: 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc
Alcohol content: 13.5% vol.

Aromas of dark berries, cigar wrapper and licorice introduce the 2022 Potensac, a medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy Médoc with a deep core of fruit and powdery structuring tannins. It's built along similar lines to the 2020.

2021 Chateau Potensac

Drinking Window
2026 - 2036
From: 2021 Bordeaux En Primeur: Back to Classicism (May 2022)
The 2021 Potensac is beguiling. Perhaps it is the high amount of Cabernet Franc (23%) in the blend this year. The 2021 exudes refinement from the very first taste. Rose petal, spice, crushed red berry fruit and sweet pipe tobacco all open effortlessly. Readers will find a Haut-Médoc endowed with compelling aromatic presence and exceptional balance. The purity of the flavors is striking.

This wine is therefore made by Michel Delon of Leoville las Cases in St. Julien. Due to the various extensions, the pointed church in the hamlet of Potensac belongs to the domain. The Chappele de Potensac is the 2nd wine of this Chateau.
Owner Jean-Hubert Delon inherited Chateau Potensac from his grandmother Georgette Liquard and, in addition to Château Leoville Las Cases in Saint-Julien and Château Nénin in Pomerol, acquired a beautiful domain.
Château Potensac was the only AC Médoc to have the status of Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel until this classification was abolished in 2007. The domain is located in the north of the Médoc on a high point on a limestone soil covered with siliceous clay, similar to that of Saint-Estephe. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc canes grow up to 80 years old in this special terroir and still produce perfectly ripe and healthy grapes. Château Potensac is a powerful, rich wine and is considered by many to be a classic example of a Médoc.
