Description
Winery Château Le Gay
Château Le Gay is a leading estate in Pomerol, situated on one of the appellation's finest gravel and clay terraces. The château is known for its powerful, concentrated style, with a strong focus on ripeness and structure. In recent years, the style has become more refined, with greater emphasis on balance and precision without losing its characteristic depth. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region and year 2022
The 2022 vintage in Pomerol brought exceptional ripeness and concentration. Thanks to the deep clay soils, the vines withstood the heat well and retained their freshness. The result is a wine with power, intensity, and clear structure, yet with more refinement than in previous warm years.
Vineyards and grape varieties
The vineyards of Château Le Gay are situated on a combination of gravel and clay, ideal for Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc. These soils create both concentration and tension. The Merlot gives the wine its rich core, while Cabernet Franc provides freshness and aromatic precision.
Vinification and maturation
Château Le Gay is known for fermenting in new oak barriques, which gives the wine extra structure and intensity. In 2022, the extraction is powerful yet controlled, allowing the wine to retain its strength without being overpowering. The aging in new oak adds complexity with subtle toasted and spicy notes.
Color, smell and taste
Deep dark red in color. The nose offers rich aromas of blackcurrant and blackberry, combined with menthol, fresh herbs like lemongrass and basil, and a subtle woody note.
Full and powerful on the palate, with a muscular structure and firm yet silky tannins. The wine displays concentration and depth, as well as freshness and focus. Dark fruit and spicy nuances are supported by a refined, taut finish that reveals length and elegance. Despite its power, the wine remains balanced and thoughtful.
Magnum 1.5 liter
This 2022 Château Le Gay is offered in a 1.5-liter magnum. A magnum matures more slowly and evenly, which, in a powerful vintage like 2022, adds extra harmony and complexity. This size enhances both its cellaring potential and its collecting value.
Drinking window and development
With ratings of up to 97 points, the 2022 Château Le Gay is impressive and structured. It's recommended to wait until at least 2029, after which the wine will open up further and can continue to evolve for many years to come.
Summary of professional reviews
The 2022 is praised for its combination of rich blackcurrant fruit, fresh spice, and firm yet refined tannins. A powerful, layered Pomerol that displays more elegance than ever before and has excellent aging potential.

The 2022 Le Gay offers up aromas of rich cassis, menthol and toasty new oak, followed by a full-bodied, rich and rather muscular palate framed by sweet, liberally extracted tannins that assert themselves on the finish. While this remains quite a chunky, stylized wine, defined by its fermentation in new oak barriques, it is comparatively restrained for this estate in such an extreme vintage.

From: 2022 Bordeaux in Bottle: Living in the Present (Jan 2025)
The 2022 Le Gay is a floral, effusive Pomerol. Medium in body and gracious, with lovely silkiness, the 2022 is a charmer. Crushed flowers, bright-red toned fruit and hints of spice open nicely. Le Gay is vinified entirely in barrel, and yet the oak imprint is not at all dominant. Time in the glass releases a whole range of sweet floral accents that add an exotic flair. This is a very pretty and distinctive wine.

Ideally situated on the Pomerol plateau, Château Le Gay used to be owned by the Robin sisters. The Parent family took over the château and its 10,5 hectares in 2002.
Since the, the vineyard and cellar have been constantly evolving. Four new hectares of high-density vines were planted, and more than half of the rest of the plateau land was also restructured. Convinced that "vinification intégrale" fermentation enhances quality, Henri Parent began renovating the Château Le Gay cellar in 2014 (despite its recent renovation in 2003) in order to control the temperature of the 250 barrels during the cold maceration process, as well aw during their fermentation process.
Today, still fervently driven by pursuing quality, we use other techniques such as harvesting in several passes, creating smaller plots within some non-uniform plots and favoring cold maceration methods. Each vine is known and recorded. The vineyards are primarily planted with 90% Merlot, although the proportion of Cabernet Franc should increase a little in the net few years.
Nothing is left to chance to ensure that Château Le Gay keeps progressing.
