Château La Mission Haut-Brion is among the very best in Pessac-Léognan and shares its historic reputation with neighbor Haut-Brion. The estate is known for its deep, layered style that blends power and finesse. The combination of gravelly soils and careful vinification produces wines with great precision, aging potential, and a distinct identity. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
2022 Château La Mission Haut-Brion Magnum
The 2022 La Mission Haut-Brion is one of the absolute benchmarks of the year. In magnum form, this wine is given extra time and tranquility to unfold its full complexity.
The 2022 vintage
2022 was warm and dry, but the old vines and deep roots on the gravelly soils provided balance and freshness. The wine displays intensity without heaviness. Everything feels controlled and precise, despite the richness of the vintage. The result is a wine that combines power with refinement and tension.
Color, smell and taste
Deep, dark ruby red with an almost inky core. The nose reveals ripe red and dark fruit with notes of blood orange, new leather, and exotic spices. The palate is full and explosive, yet without harsh edges. The structure is seamless, with a perfect balance of ripe fruit, fresh acidity, and velvety tannins. The finish is long, resonant, and exceptionally refined.
Structure and storage potential
This 2022 boasts both immediate appeal and enormous depth for extended aging. Its balance and precision are already impressive, but its true complexity will unfold over decades. In magnum, its development will be even more even, with aging potential well beyond 2050.

Less muscular and more approachable than it appeared en primeur, the 2022 La Mission Haut-Brion has turned out beautifully in bottle. Unfurling with aromas of spices, smoke, dark berries, pencil lead and licorice mingled with delicate floral top-notes, it's full-bodied, deep and concentrated with a velvety attack that segues into an elegantly structured and energetic mid-palate that's nicely framed by sweet but abundant tannins, concluding with a long, penetrating and perfumed finish. It's a blend of 51.7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43.2% Merlot and 5.1% Cabernet Franc.

This has real al dente fruit character on the palate with lemon rind and blackcurrants with blueberries. Lead pencil and stone, too. Full-bodied with chewy and juicy tannins that are primary and growing quickly on the palate as you taste it. Reminds me of the 1978, but brighter and more precise. 51.7% cabernet sauvignon, 43.2% merlot and 5.1% cabernet franc.

From: 2022 Bordeaux in Bottle: Living in the Present (Jan 2025)
The 2022 La Mission Haut-Brion is a total stunner, just as it was en primeur. An archetype of finesse. Dark and explosive, with no hard edges, the 2022 is captivating right out of the gate. Vibrant red fruit, blood orange, new leather and exotic spice notes are all beautifully alive in the glass. The 2022 is seamless and resonant, with magnificent balance and tons of pure class. I would be thrilled to own it. In a word: dazzling.
