Description
History and location of Château Clos de Sarpe
Located on the Sarpe plateau in Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes, Château Clos de Sarpe covers 3.7 hectares of vineyard. The estate has been owned by the Beyney family since 1923. In 2012, the château was promoted to Grand Cru Classé. Since 2017, the estate has been in conversion to organic farming, with certification achieved in 2020. The vineyard is planted with 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, with an average age of 65 years for the vines.
Terroir and climate of Saint-Émilion
The terroir of Clos de Sarpe consists of clay and limestone soils on the top of a hill, which ensures excellent drainage and a regular water supply. This contributes to the low pH of the wines (around 3.2-3.3), resulting in high acidity and great ageing potential.
Vinification and maturation of Château Clos de Sarpe
The grapes are harvested by hand in small crates to avoid bruising. After careful selection, the grapes undergo gentle vinification in unlined concrete tanks and 600-liter barrels. The wine is then aged for 13 to 14 months in French oak barrels, 70% of which are new and 30% one year old. No fining or filtration processes are used, and only indigenous yeasts are used for fermentation.
Tasting notes of Château Clos de Sarpe
In the glass, the wine shows a deep ruby red color. The bouquet reveals aromas of blackcurrants, blackberries, violets and subtle spicy notes. In the mouth, the wine is full and complex, with silky tannins and a lively acidity. The finish is long and elegant, with nuances of dark fruit and mineral notes.

A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Clos de Sarpe wafts from the glass with aromas of sweet red berries, cherries, licorice and petals. Full-bodied, broad and layered, it's no blushing violet at 15% alcohol; yet this limestone terroir has delivered a remarkably low pH and concomitant freshness, and judicious extraction during a long but low-temperature maceration means that it remains suave and seamless.

Plenty of plush wood spices that aren’t yet fully integrated into the rich blackberries and tapenade. Full-bodied and fine-grained on the palate, with sappy fruit and tannins. Flavorful, long and a bit woody now, but it shows potential. Try from 2029.

From: 2022 Bordeaux in Bottle: Living in the Present (Jan 2025)
The 2022 Clos de Sarpe is fabulous. Brisk, aromatic and vibrant, the 2022 captures the intensity this site is known for. Dark red/purplish fruit, blood orange, spice, new leather and dried herbs make a strong first impression. Bright saline notes liven up the finish. This is quite simply one of the best editions of Clos de Sarpe I have tasted.

From: 2022 Bordeaux En Primeur: Balance Imbalance (May 2023)
The 2022 Clos de Sarpe is fabulous. Dark, structured and wonderfully deep, the 2022 marries the richness of this warm, dry year with beams of vibrant acidity that lend sizzling tension. Bright red/purplish berry fruit, lavender, rose petal, spice and pomegranate all build, but the wine’s sublime balance impresses most. The 2022 is another important Clos de Sarpe under the guidance of Maylis Marcenat, who continues to bring much-needed new energy to this striking property.

From: You’re Unbelievable: Bordeaux 2022 (May 2023)
The 2022 Clos de Sarpe has been moving in a positive direction for several years. This latest iteration has a rich and opulent bouquet with blueberry, crushed strawberry, incense and wild mint aromas. The palate is medium-bodied and continues the revised style of Clos de Sarpe - more terroir-driven, more mineral and fresher. I particularly like the delineation and complexity on the finish. Excellent.
