Description
Together with Château Pétrus and Ausone, Château Cheval Blanc is one of the legends of the right bank. Always possesses an enormous concentration, but at the same time finesse and freshness. This cru is owned by the Belgian Albert Frère and Bernard Arnault. It is Pierre Lurton (from the branch of Dominique Lurton) who vinifies the wine there (just like in Château d'Yquem). This year, vinification took place for the fifth time in the ultra-modern new chais by the architect Christian de Portzamparc. 50 specially shaped (tronconical) concrete cuvees ensure microvinification per plot. Concrete was chosen because it has good thermal insulation and a tronconical shape because it ensures a softer extraction of the berries for better fermentation. Everything is also vinified using the principle of gravity (so the wine or berries are no longer pumped up). A gigantic investment in the service of quality!
The relatively new white wine from Cheval Blanc (2018 was the first vintage), Le Petit Cheval Blanc, is a blend of 79% Sauvignon Blanc and 29% Sémillon. The wine has a nose of great freshness and precision, with a fine diversity of white flesh and citrus fruits. There are intense notes of ripe pineapple, passion fruit and white peaches, followed by fragrant notes of lemongrass, lime blossom and hints of salty sea spray. The palate is full of seductive fatness with complex layers of tropical fruits, citrus peel and minerals, marked by a refreshing line and ending with numerous mineral sparks. So beautiful, but anyway this is also from Cheval Blanc.
2022 is one of the driest vintages ever recorded on the estate, with an increase in average temperatures. This has particularly affected the production of young vines, and specifically Sauvignon Blanc, resulting in a severe reduction in volume of -50% this year. The Sémillon, which grows on clay soils, was less affected by the drought and has a higher share in the blend this year (29%) than usual (20%). As is well known, 2022 was fantastic. Often a seriously lower yield goes hand in hand with high quality!!

Cheval Blanc's relatively new white wine, the 2018 Le Petit Cheval Blanc, is a blend of 74% Sauvignon Blanc and 26% Sémillon. This is the first vintage that the Sémillon plantings have come online to make the blend. Profound notions of ripe pineapple, passion fruit and white peaches explode from the glass, followed by fragrant notes of lemongrass, lime blossoms and yuzu zest with a waft of sea spray. The palate is full-bodied with an alluring oiliness to the texture and layer upon layer of tropical fruits, citrus peel and minerals, marked by a refreshing line and finishing with loads of mineral sparks. Put aside all your preconceptions of "Bordeaux Blanc" and don't even try to compare it to Pessac-Leognan. This has its own gorgeous expression of these grapes, defying regional tradition. Give yourself over to the rich decadence of this flamboyant white that is at once without peers, but is also quintessentially Cheval Blanc.

Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux 95 (2021)
"White pear, sage, mango and citrus set the tone for this vibrant and juicy vintage of Le Petit Cheval. A touch of fennel and anised bitterness on the finish contrasts with a lovely density through the mid palate, and the whole thing is given lift, salinity and spice from waves of subtle oyster shell, lime zest and ginger. Lingering finish, great quality. Very few Bordeaux whites have this kind of long barrel aging on lees, 10% new oak, spread across a mix of 600l demi-muids for 20% of the volume and the rest in larger oak casks in a range of sizes. Estate director Pierre-Olivier Clouet."
