Description
Château CAP DE FAUGÈRES from Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux has been part of Château Faugères for a long time. The Cap de Faugères is the little brother of Péby Faugères and Faugères, Château Cap de Faugères, with an area of 20 ha, is located in the beautiful town of Sainte-Colombe, in the Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux appellation. It benefits from a beautiful terroir of clay and limestone in the continuity of that of Saint-Emilion, worked by the same team with the same rigour and passion. With each vintage, the terroir expresses itself to make wines of immediate pleasure. Vinified by the same team and with the same rigour, the wine of the estate benefits from a cellar designed by the architects Jean de Gastines and Patrick Dillon. Behind its monumental door, it offers its 20 stainless steel vats for the production of wines that are tasted shortly after bottling. Distributed all over the world, the bottles of Cap de Faugères can even be enjoyed at the most prestigious tables, including those of the English Royal Family, who in 2012 served the estate's wine on the occasion of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. Faugeres is also accompanied by Michel Rolland.
The grapes for Cap de Faugères come from 20 hectares, planted on a clay-limestone slope, bordering the slopes of Saint-Emilion. Small yields of around 45 hectoliters per hectare. Certified with the High Environmental Value level 3 label. The wine is a blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Vinification in stainless steel vats to preserve freshness and elegance. The wine is aged for 12 to 14 months, 60% in first year oak barrels and 40% in second year barrels. No fining is done (so some sediment may remain in the bottle)
In contrast to Péby Faugères and Faugères, this Cap de Faugères is meant to be enjoyed in its early years. The wine has delicious young, crisp fruit and supple tannins. Medium-bodied red with plums and berries. delicious Soft and refined with beautiful, ripe and creamy tannins. Very polished. The wine (rightly) gets a very high rating (see the tab: Attachment for an overview) and this is mainly because the price/quality is unprecedentedly good.

91-93/100
Rich, deep, dark and fruity, from start to finish you find layers of chocolate-coated, black fruits, licorice, black cherries, and espresso. The wine is plush, round, polished and forward, with a touch of salt and more dark, plummy fruits on the backend. The wine was blended with 85% Merlot, and15% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2025-2034.
Mai 2023 – Bernard Burtschy 91-92/100
Mai 2023 – Falstaff, Peter Moser
92/100
Deep dark ruby, purple reflections, subtle brightening on the rim. Fine nuances of sweet fresh cherries, plums, nougat and spices. Juicy, ripe and elegant, fresh core, mineral and persistent, a reliable food wine.
May 2023 – Tasting book, Markus del Monego
91/100
Dark purple color with violet hue and black core. Elegant nose with slightly closed character, opening up slowly. Hints of ripe berries and juicy plums, discreet oak and mild spices. Fine fruit, ripe black- 91p berries, hints of blackcurrant jam and sweet strawberries. Subtle oak. On the palate well balanced with ripe yet tannins, sweet fruit and very good length.
April 2023 – Alexdandre Ma 90-91/100
April 2023 – Yves Beck
91-93/100
April 2023 – Jane Anson
91/100
Plenty of estate signature, high tannins met equally by high freshness, this has enjoyable balance, muscular with plenty of damson and plum puree, has impact but carries it off.

From 1823, the Esquissaud family acquired the estates of Châteaux Faugères and Péby Faugères. In 1987, the land is inherited by Pierre-Bernard Guisez. Until then, all wine produced had been sold to one local merchant. P. Guisez and his wife Corinne wanted to get more involved in the vineyards and started looking for the best quality. Their wish was to see these exquisite terroirs become jewels in the crown of the Saint-Emilion Grand Cru appellation, a wish that would soon be fulfilled with the help of Michel Rolland - the famous wine consultant. Since the year 2000, the wines of Château Faugères and Château Péby Faugères have taken their place among the very best. Robert Parker described the Château Faugères in 2000 as "one of the great revelations of this vintage".
In March 2005, the property was bought by Silvio Denz - a perfume designer, lover of fine wines, owner of Lalique and of two wine merchants in Zurich of which "Denz Weine". He is passionate about art and in particular the creations of René Lalique. When he acquired Château Faugères, he decided to rely on the exceptional clay and limestone to take the wines of Château Faugères to the heights, continuing the quest for quality and allowing the great terroirs of Faugères to express themselves to the fullest and that is rewarded because in 2012 Château Faugères will become a Grand Cru Classé
Château Faugères covers 37 hectares of land that includes some of the most beautiful terroirs of Saint-Emilion. The vines are on a limestone plateau of asteria limestone subsoil, dating from the lower Oligocene, and clay and limestone slopes facing southeast in a circular formation, with limestone soil on clay and upper Eocene and Oligocene limestone molasses. This terroir is cultivated through natural sustainable viticulture.
The monumental winery designed by Mario Botta is located at the top of the plateau overlooking Château Faugères, built in the 18th century chartreuse style. It is a harmonious addition to the countryside, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mario Botta, "Master of Light and Gravity", has managed to turn the Château Faugères winery into a masterful work of art - a true wine cathedral. "For me, the project invites a comparison between 'rational' architecture built by man and the 'natural' evolution of the countryside," explains Mario Botta, "one enriching the other."
For Silvio Denz, the goal of the new winery is to serve the never-ending quest to improve the quality of the wine at every stage of production, using the very latest technology. Michel Rolland again actively cooperated, giving absolute priority to the capacity, organization and optimization of internal procedures.
