Description
Brane Cantenac's roots can be traced back to the early 18th century. At that time it was owned by the Gorce family and was known as Château Gorce (and for a while as Château Gorce Guy). Today the Château consists of 90 hectares of vineyards in the Margaux appellation. The largest vineyard comprises 45 hectares and is located next to the Château on the Plateau de Brane. The 2nd vineyard (22 hectares) is located further north near Soussans. The remaining vineyards are located further south near Arsac. The terroir consists mainly of gravel but to a lesser extent also of sand and clay. This Margaux consists of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Baron de Brane is the second wine of Château Brane Cantenac.
The Baron de Brane has a deep red colour with purple hues. In the nose intense and mainly by red fruit dominated aromas. There is also a hint of mint and flowers and licorice. The taste is intense, yet smooth and has a fresh and long aftertaste. This wine is well balanced and can age well. Beautiful full and soft taste, lots of suppleness, but the cabernet also gives it backbone, fresh acids and some tannins.
Ratings: 89-91 Wine Advocate, 92-93 James Suckling, 91-93 Wine Cellar Insider (Jeff Leve), 92 Jane Anson, 17.5 WeinWisser, 90-92 Vinous (A. Galloni), 94 Falstaff Magazine.

The 2016 Baron de Brane is a blend of 65% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc. It has a very pure and charming bouquet with brambly red fruit, cedar and pencil shavings, very assured for a Deuxième Vin. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannin on the entry, the fruit a little darker than the nose suggests, segueing into a well-defined second half with brown spices and hints of leather. This is an intriguing Baron de Brane.

From: 2022 Bordeaux in Bottle: Living in the Present (Jan 2025)
The 2022 Baron de Brane is a gorgeous second wine. Merlot drives the blend, and that comes through in the wine's plush contours and forward, succulent fruit. Black cherry, plum, licorice and menthol all meld together in an effortless wine that is all charm. This is beautifully done.

From: 2022 Bordeaux En Primeur: Balance Imbalance (May 2023)
The 2022 Baron de Brane capture all of the richness of the year in its exuberant personality. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, spice, leather and licorice offer notable radiance. This supple, enchanting Margaux should drink well with minimal cellaring. There is a bit of firmness in the tannin from the drought. Hopefully élevage will soften some of the edges.
