Bodegas El Nido is a project of the Gil Vera Family from Jumilla, together with Australian winemaker Chris Ringland; it was founded in 2002. The wines, Corteo, Clio, and El Nido, are made from grapes from the oldest vineyards owned by the Gil family around the winery. The El Nido Corteo from the eponymous bodega is among the top 25 wines in Spain and is the flagship wine from Juan Gill's estate (the 2022 is the successor to the 2019). La Vina de Corteo from Bodegas El Nido is produced only in the absolute best years. The 2009 vintage marked the first production of this 100% Syrah Corteo.

La Viña de Corteo is their pure Syrah from a vineyard of just 1.8 hectares, so only around 1,000 bottles are ever produced. The grapes fermented in stainless steel tanks with open lids and finished with fermentation in French and American oak barrels, where the wine underwent malolactic fermentation and aged for 28 to 30 months. This virtuoso has notes of roasted corn and is a very toasted, ripe, and concentrated style of Syrah, much closer to Australian wines (no wonder!) than those from the Northern Rhône. It is ripe, full-bodied, and generously oaked, with abundant toasted notes and dusty tannins.

"Corteo combines aromatic intensity with harmony and mouth filling sensation. The persistent finish, with a lasting, velvety impression and harmony is noteworthy. It is impossible to fail with this wine"

Miguel Gil, recorded owner of the top domain Juan Gil, chose quality over quantity in Jumila, undiscovered for years, out of respect and love for his region (and great wine!) For the mini project of Bodegas El Nido, he calls on the Australian top winemaker Chris Ringland (at Parker good for 100/100…) 2 wines are made at this small Bodega: Clio & El Nido. The 16 ha Monastrell followed of 60 years old perched on terraces oriented northeast. Furthermore, 25 years ago, 12 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon were planted on the hills with an oblique north in the same region. Today, these unique top quality mature grapes, magnificently bred by the Gil-Ringland duo, offer the most aristocratic wines in Spain.

The entire international wine press is unanimous in its assessment of the El Nido and Clio wines. Unprecedentedly good and fitting to the top of Spanish wines. In absolute terms, the El Nido and the Clio are not cheap, but in relative terms (eg compared to top Bordeaux) the Clio and Nido cost a fraction and therefore have an unprecedented good price / quality. In our beautiful selection of wines, the El Nido and Clio should not be missing in the opinion of Miquel and Juan Gil.
