Description
Clio Jumilla is produced by Bodegas El Nido, owned by renowned winemaker Juan Gill. The grapes for this wine come from 12 hectares (29.65 acres) of Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards and 32 hectares (79 acres) of very old Monastrell, with a very low yield. The vineyards are over 60 years old. The grapes are harvested by hand using small baskets to prevent bruising. The bunches are brought to sorting tables where only the best grapes are selected. The wine ages for 20-24 months in new French and American oak barrels, where it develops a very characteristic complexity. The wine is then bottle-aged for several more months and is then released around late October/November of the year. The Clio is vinified by grandmaster Chris Ringland (a 100/100 Parker). Given the enormous demand and very limited supply, this wine, like the top model EL Nido , the Blue Label (18 months) from Juan Gil, and the Corteo, importers receive an allocation (which is always too little). Despite the price, this is still unique compared to other wines of similar quality and, from that perspective, a "bargain."
The quality immediately jumps out of the glass upon arrival: earthy, mushroom, leather, blueberry, and blackcurrant jam. The palate is also remarkably complex yet smooth, revealing notes of blueberry and blackberry, some spice, and a hint of pepper. A powerful wine with exceptional balance and length. Breathtaking and of a very high quality. A delicious 1.5-liter magnum. Only a limited number of bottles are produced, and in this size, the wine is even more delicious and lasts longer.

The 2022 Clio was produced with 70% Monastrell and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon that fermented in stainless steel with neutral yeasts and matured in new French and American oak barrels for 23 months. Despite the oak used, the wine is not that oaky; it's spicy and smoky with notes of ripe berries and aromatic herbs. It's full-bodied, with 15% alcohol, a pH of 3.62 and 5.7 grams of acidity, keeping three grams of residual sugar. It's ripe and lush, with abundant, fine-grained tannins. 46,5000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2024.
El Nido is the joint venture between the Gil and Australian winemaker Chris Ringland. The style is ripe and generous in oak, but somehow I found less oak in the wines (and more in Bruto) this year. They produce 70,000 bottles.

Miguel Gil, recorded owner of the top domain Juan Gil, chose quality over quantity in Jumila, undiscovered for years, out of respect and love for his region (and great wine!) For the mini project of Bodegas El Nido, he calls on the Australian top winemaker Chris Ringland (at Parker good for 100/100…) 2 wines are made at this small Bodega: Clio & El Nido. The 16 ha Monastrell followed of 60 years old perched on terraces oriented northeast. Furthermore, 25 years ago, 12 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon were planted on the hills with an oblique north in the same region. Today, these unique top quality mature grapes, magnificently bred by the Gil-Ringland duo, offer the most aristocratic wines in Spain.
The entire international wine press is unanimous in its assessment of the El Nido and Clio wines. Unprecedentedly good and fitting to the top of Spanish wines. In absolute terms, the El Nido and the Clio are not cheap, but in relative terms (eg compared to top Bordeaux) the Clio and Nido cost a fraction and therefore have an unprecedented good price / quality. In our beautiful selection of wines, the El Nido and Clio should not be missing in the opinion of Miquel and Juan Gil.
