In 1978, Roman and Adelheid Pfaffl became owners of Weingut Pfaffl in Stetten, a small village just north of Vienna in the Weinviertel region of Lower Austria , at a young age. Before 1978, the Pfaffl farm was dedicated to growing grains and potatoes and raising cows and pigs. Much has changed in a short time. Today, Pfaffl is an international symbol of Grüner Veltliner. They were even named European Winery of the Year by Wine Enthusiast.

Lower Austria is the region surrounding the capital Vienna and is the largest wine-growing area in Austria. Loess soils, warm days, and cool nights. Ideal for Zweigelt, Austria's most important red grape. After entirely manual harvesting, the grapes are destemmed and lightly crushed. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of 28 degrees in stainless steel tanks for 26 days. The juice is regularly pumped over to extract more flavor and color. After fermentation, 30% of the wine ages for several months in oak barrels, and the remainder in stainless steel. In the glass, the Pfaffl Zweigelt is ruby red with fresh notes of black cherries, sour cherries, berries, and some herbs on the nose. The freshness and juiciness return on the palate. The wine is round and smooth with plenty of ripe dark fruit (cherries, berries) and soft tannins. The Pfaffl Zweigelt is versatile, for example with grilled steak or pizza with salami. Also delicious with spaghetti bolognese.

In 1978, Roman and Adelheid Pfaffl became owners of Weingut Pfaffl at a young age in Stetten, a village just north of Vienna in the Weinviertel region. Before 1978, the Pfaffl farm was dominated by grain, potatoes, and livestock. A lot has changed in a short time. Today, Pfaffl is an international symbol for Grüner Veltliner. They have even been voted European Winery of the Year by Wine Enthusiast.

In forty years, Weingut Pfaffl has grown from 0.75 hectares to 110 hectares of vineyard. While the majority of the wines were first served in their local restaurant, wine lovers all over the world now drink wines from Pfaffl.

Today the winery is run by the enthusiastic Roman Pfaffl Jr. and Heidemarie Fischer. With over 1.4 million bottles on an annual basis, Pfaffl is a serious company, with a very high degree of professionalism. This is not only reflected in the wines, but also everything around it. Roman and Heidi have their affairs in order very well. Whether it's the website, the fast customer service, or the modern vineyard techniques, nothing is left to chance to create a total experience.

The vineyards of Pfaffl are spread over 12 villages with a very striking diversity in terroir. The different Grüner Veltliners that Pfaffl makes best reflect these terroir differences. For example, the Zeisen vineyard is even located on a 'Chablis-like' fossil substrate. Besides Grüner Veltliner, Pfaffl is known for its Gemischter Satz (several white grape varieties from one vineyard) and elegant red wines from Zweigelt and Pinot Noir.

Both in the business operations and the wines of Pfaffl, the core values of young, pure, and refreshing come into their own. Pfaffl was named Best Austrian Producer in 2022 by the Frankfurt International Trophy. Earlier this year they received the same award from Mundus Vini. Founder Roman Pfaffl meant so much to Austrian viticulture and in particular the Grüner Veltliner that he was nicknamed Mister Veltliner. His son Roman Pfaffl Jr. has followed in his footsteps and still fully lives up to that reputation.
