Description
2021 brought an exceptional vintage thanks to a moderate season that translated into long, even ripening that preserved the natural acidity of the grapes. The result is an elegant wine, fresh and full of tension, with a high aromatic complexity, which is complemented by the finesse of the tannins, an important characteristic of Viñedo Chadwick. A wine with a wonderfully elegant structure, perseverance and enormous maturing potential.
The season started with warmer than normal weather, allowing for even ripening, and returned to moderate temperatures in November and December. A little rain in late January helped replenish well-drained gravel soils and cool summer temperatures. Cooler conditions during the summer allowed the healthy grapes to ripen softly and smoothly. The ripeness of the tannins and sugars progressed slowly together until picking time. The berries were firm, with excellent color, ripe tannins and fresh acidity, balanced by an optimal sugar content. After this mild ripening season, the harvest started towards the end of March.
This deep purple colored Viñedo Chadwick 2021 is very complex on the nose, with intense aromas of violets, raspberries and cassis. Followed by cocoa, coffee beans and nutmeg. A wine that is long and deep together with flavors of fresh red fruit, dark chocolate and spices. In the mouth the wine is complex and layered. It reveals fine-grained, chalky tannins with juicy acidity, elegance and a long finish.

The 2021 Viñedo Chadwick fermented in stainless steel and troncoconic concrete vats, spent some 10 months in barrique, and then part of the wine (some 20%) was sent to the Stockinger foudres. The nose is reminiscent of a super elegant and sleek Bordeaux, pure and clean, less balsamic than in previous years and less herbal. It's perfumed and floral, precise, fresh and elegant, with very fine tannins, and despite the grape, it is more Pomerol than Graves, with 14% alcohol on the label but without any heat at all. It's velvety and luxurious, juicy and tasty, with fine-grained chalky tannins and the elegant stoniness that the best Maipos are capable of. It has structure and power, like the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove. This has to be the finest vintage for Chadwick; the wine made my heart beat faster—it's a wine of emotion. This is also my first 100-point wine from Chile! The final blend contains around 3% Petit Verdot from vines planted in 2005. There are some 10,000 bottles of this, and it was all bottled all at once on January 31, 2023.
The 2021 season at the Chadwick vineyard in Maipo was certainly cooler than any preceding years, especially during the end of the season. Despite being a warmer zone than Seña (the sister property), it was pretty similar in 2021. They want to try to bottle a bit earlier and not show the wines just after bottling, as this is now sold through La Place de Bordeaux. This 2021 is elegant and balanced, a wine of emotion, a coup de coeur that gets my first 100-point score for Chile. This is a golden goodbye for winemaker Francisco "Pancho" Baettig, who after 20 years of dedication here, leaves after the 2021 vintage to focus on his personal project, but he will continue as an external consultant here. Bravo!!

Country : Chile
Region : Valle Central
Vintage : 2021
Score : 99
Beautiful nose with lots of currants, red cherries, flowers, roasted chili and dark chocolate. A fine hint of balsamic. More red fruit than black fruit here with bright cherries and a hint of cigar box. Really even on the palate, with a medium to full body and effortless tannins -- plentiful and silky. Extremely fine-grained and long. Very young but the superb freshness and the tannin quality of this vintage makes you think this is already drinkable. Better from 2025.

Drinking Window 2026 - 2041
From: Chile: Thinking Outside The Box (Jun 2023)
The 2021 Viñedo Chadwick is a Cabernet Sauvignon with a dash of Petit Verdot (3%) from Puente Alto, Maipo. It was aged for 22 months, 80% in new French oak barrels and 20% in foudres. The mild summer in the area helped to sculpt the vivid, nuanced aromatic profile: crystal clear blackcurrant notes with sour cherry and raspberry layers plus hints of pepper over a faint cigar box bed. Silky and dry in the mouth, the finely tuned Maipo tannins and refreshing acidity from the cool year make for a long-lasting, complex wine. A Bordeaux-inspired red that enjoyed the very Bordelaise weather in the region this year.

Chile deserves the top prize of all 'new' wine countries. Mainly due to the fact that the wines of this country have found a connection with the taste of many wine lovers, wherever in the world, at a record pace. There are of course special reasons for this success. The climate and soil type are ideal here and the classic European grape varieties were already present. Yet it is mainly thanks to the vision of people like Eduardo Chadwick-Errázuriz that these benefits were so quickly translated into resounding success. Exactly 140 years ago, Maximiano Errázuriz planted his vineyard in Panquehue, at the foot of the highest mountain in the Andes chain. The cool fall winds, proximity to the Aconcagua River and annual rainfall of only 25 cm make this an ideal area for wine growing. His great-grandson Eduardo Chadwick-Errázuriz has added a number of plots since 1990; they are planted with the grape varieties that best suit the specific soil and microclimate. As a result, in addition to the classic cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay, the merlot, shiraz and carmenère also benefit from this earthly paradise for wine growing. Viña Errázuriz has since grown to become the absolute top of Chilean wine producers.
