Persoonlijke gegevens
Alfred Tesseron (of Château Pontet-Canet in Pauillac, Bordeaux) was looking for a special terroir outside Bordeaux to work with. He sought out a place where the grape varieties he was familiar with from Bordeaux thrived, and specifically a place where these grapes were at their best. He found that place on the originally volcanic and 500-meter-high Mt. Veeder in Napa Valley. Tesseron stumbled upon the 29-year-old vineyard of actor Robin Williams, who had passed away two years earlier. Tesseron bought the vineyard in 2016 and named the project Pym Rae: the name Williams had given the vineyard, named after the nicknames of his children. Williams had never made wine from this vineyard, but Tesseron saw its great potential. The vineyard is now cultivated using the same biodynamic methods as at Château Pontet-Canet, and with the same precision and dedication.
The Tesseron Estate Pym-Rae is a blend of primarily Cabernet Sauvignon complemented by Merlot and Cabernet Franc. In the glass, this top Napa has a deep garnet purple color and reveals deliciously fragrant notes of candied violets, wilted roses, damp earth, and black tea over a heart of red and black currants, black cherries, and warm blackberries, plus a hint of cigar box and camphor wax. Medium to full-bodied with a rock-solid fruit structure on the palate, fine-grained tannins that beautifully support the elegant red and black fruit layers, and a very long, highly perfumed finish.
This Pym-Rae offers aromas of flowers, berries, plums, and cocoa. It is full-bodied with compact fruit and fine tannins, giving it suppleness and finesse, yet remaining very structured and long. The wine is aged in 55% new French barrels and 45% concrete eggs for 18 months. The wine consists of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc.

The 2019 Pym-Rae is made up of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot, all aged in a combination of 45% new French oak barriques and small (260-gallon) concrete tanks. Impressively ripe and concentrated, it offers scents of cassis, violet and hints of dark chocolate on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is silky-smooth, framed by dusty tannins on the long, focused finish. Yes, it's somewhat Bordeaux-like in shape, but it's fully ripe, with black cherries emerging on the finish, along with the slightest touch of alcoholic warmth.
For those unfamiliar with the story, the Tesseron family is originally from Cognac. Working primarily as a négociant, they slowly built a reputation and fortune, until Guy Tesseron purchased Bordeaux fifth-growth Château Pontet-Canet in 1975. Alfred Tesseron (Guy's son), not content with running Pontet-Canet, was looking for another project, one outside Bordeaux, said his son, Noe Tesseron, when we connected via Zoom earlier this fall. "He'd spent a lot of time in the US," said Noe. "He worked six years at Southern."
The search for property in Napa Valley quickly zeroed in on mountain locations, because they wanted to dry-farm the vines, explained Noe. Finally, after six years, Robin Williams's estate on Mount Veeder came on the market. It came with a big property, a huge house and a small vineyard of 18 acres, located between 1,600 and 1,900 feet above sea level.
It's a location that allows for dry-farming and freshness," said Noe. "We like wines that have tension, that are balanced, and being up there facilitates that."
The Tesserons took over in January 2016, immediately converting to dry-farming, organic and biodynamic viticulture. Most of the vineyard is east-facing, planted to vines that are now 30 years old. Sitting above the usual fog line, the vineyard is planted to 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 7% Cabernet France. All the vineyard work is done by hand, under the supervision of General Manager Jerome Ledit, who previously worked at Pontet-Canet and at Chapoutier's Alsace venture before that.
Following hand-harvesting and sorting, fermentation takes place in small (10 hectoliter) concrete vats. After pressing, roughly half of the wine goes into new French oak, while the balance matures in concrete for 16 to 18 months. Roughly 15,000 bottles are produced each year, although Noe said the 2020 vintage—earmarked for release late in 2024—would be smaller than usual.

James Suckling
“This is so aromatic, with aromas of black fruit, mushrooms, pencil shavings, bark, blackberries and orange peel. So enticing. Medium- to full-bodied with a linear and lightly dusty tannin structure that coats the mouth beautifully and leaves your palate clean and energized. Fine-textured tannins. Well done for a complicated vintage. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Very drinkable now, but structured for aging.” – James Suckling

The 2016 is the first harvest from this estate following the purchase of the old Robin Williams vineyard by Chateau Pontet-Canet owner Alfred Tesseron in 2016. The estate includes just under 20 hectares of mature Cabernet Sauvignon (75%), Merlot (18 %) and Cabernet Franc (7 %) vines, planted in 1990. Now officially called "Pym-Rae", respecting the original name given to the vineyard by Robin Williams (Pym and Rae are the middle names of two of Williams' children). The vineyards are elevated at an average elevation of 500 meters on Mount Veeder.
For a family that owns vineyards of exceptional quality such as Pontet-|Canet, a place with great reputation and potential was necessary. An obvious choice was Napa in California. But not just anywhere in the valley. The generous nature of the climate had to be moderated by locally cool conditions: this meant a high altitude vineyard. To produce deep and balanced wines, sedimentary soils were needed with historical marine deposits that developed gradually over millions of years. The Mount Veeder region took care of all this. The vineyard had to be planted with Bordeaux varieties, the same ones the family had experience with in Pontet-Canet. Finally, the vines had to be mature, as only older plants have developed a deep root system, allowing them to extract the purest expression and minerality of the terroir, yielding full-bodied and complex wines. It's not the easiest land to farm, as certain areas are steep and steep, resulting in only a modest grape harvest. It is a remote location, like an island of nature, in the middle of nowhere. All this explains the exclusvity of Teseron Estate and the Pym-Rae already belongs to the absolute world top.
