2021 Teso la Monja
How does this wine taste?
How full and heavy the wine feels in your mouth, like the difference between skimmed milk and cream. More alcohol, sugar and oak ageing make a wine fuller.
The drying, grippy feel on your gums and tongue, as with strong tea. It comes from the skins and seeds of black grapes and from oak, and softens with age.
How much sugar you taste, from dry to sweet. Fruity is not the same as sweet: a dry wine can taste of ripe fruit.
How fresh and juicy the wine is: acidity makes your mouth water. High acidity tastes lively and refreshing, low acidity soft and round.

Log inThis premium Spanish wine is produced by the Teso La Monja winery, an exclusive winery and one of Hermanos Eguren's finest estates. The 2021 vintage is a very limited edition of 940 numbered bottles, and of the 2020 vintage, they are releasing only 694 bottles and a mere 60 magnums. The rest will go into the Eguren family library and will be released in small batches over the next 20 years (at much higher prices). The extremely old vineyard (over 160 years old) has a very low yield, but the quality is unprecedented, and connoisseurs know what a fantastic wine this is and the impact on prices with age. The wine comes from a cool vineyard of only 1.8 hectares, with extremely old vines (150 years and older – pre-phylloxera) that produce incredibly high ripeness. The bunches are harvested, individually selected, and then destemmed and crushed entirely by hand by a team of 55 highly experienced people who do this annually. The wine ferments in open-top oak barrels, followed by malolactic fermentation in an egg-shaped oak barrel. It matures in three brand-new Bordeaux barrels for approximately 24 months. This premium wine from Teso La Monja boasts an unprecedented number of layers. With every sniff and sip, something different emerges, including spices, smoke, toast, and balsamic notes of incense and cigars. Red and black fruit and oak also reappear on the palate, with a stunning finish. This wine is sold only EN primeur and only in the best vintages. It is then available in spring, with delivery at the end of the year.
Tip: Cult wines are often tampered with these days, and this one is no exception. We are the official importer, and you can check the Teso la Monja website to see if you have an official bottle issued by an importer. This way, you can be sure you haven't accidentally purchased a counterfeit or refilled bottle. You can do this at: http://www.sierracantabria.com/en/wineries/teso-la-monja/teso-la-monja-wine/
The wine is stored in our climate-controlled Wine Warehouse, and if you pick it up, you'll also receive a nice discount. We're located right next to the Rijksweg with ample parking. Click here for the address.

From: Duero: From Ribera to Toro via Rueda (And a Few Other Detours) (Jun 2025)
The 2021 Teso La Monja comes from Toro. Garnet in color, it opens with aromas of ripe plum, dried cherry, maraschino and cedar, with a hint of cigar box. The palate is full-flavored, with a smooth texture and fine tannins. It delivers a rich, creamy mouthfeel and an extremely long finish. Freshness in this warm region is notable, reflecting meticulous farming and extraction management—only light infusion in open-top fermenters. Complex, expressive and precise, the 2021 boasts an attractive chalky touch on the finish.

The Spanish winery Teso La Monja is located in the Toro. The winery heralds a new era for the Eguren family in DO Toro, a land from which she fell in love with the capacity of the old pre-phylloxera vines. Teso La Monja was founded in 2007. Wines that bring the potential of the Tinta de Toro with elegance, finesse and freshness, shared by all wines of the Eguren family attributes. The Almirez, Victorino and also the great Romanico (unprecedented good value for money in our opinion) are invariably 90+ Parker and Penin wines. Not surprising knowing that the Eguren family is also behind the Alabaster cult wine.
The Teso La Monja winery is located on north-facing loam soils with gravel on the surface, providing longer vegetative cycles for achieving balanced, powerful yet elegant wines that convey the maximum potential of soil minerality.
