2021 Sadie Family Kokerboom

Eben Sadie is considered one of the pioneers in South African viticulture. Because of his insight it can be said that the Swartland region came to be seen in a completely different light. It was Eben who found the older vineyards here and made his famous Columella and Palladius.

The Kokerboom (named after the typical South African tree) which was planted in the 1930s, located on a bed of sandstone rich in quartz that originated millions of years ago. The vineyard has never been burdened with chemicals, herbicides or pesticides in its entire existence. The vineyard is very small and only a very limited number of this iconic white South African wine is made. The wine is given a long macaration and oak ageing and should be decanted very much in its younger years.

Like all wines of the Sadie Family, this white Kokerboom is a very scarce, great wine with an impressive aging potential. The Old Vine Series Kokerboom has a beautiful fresh straw yellow color in the glass with fresh citrus and a subtle minerality with notes of freshly picked herbs. The palate shows great texture and depth of flavour, full of rocky/mineral expressions, citrus blossoms where the acidity minerality gives the wine a great backbone.

FACT: The Kokerboom is an Aloe-like tree that grows in the shape of a tree and can reach a height of 8 meters. They occur in the very dry Namaqualand and Bushmanland in South Africa, and southern Namibia. The South African name 'quiver tree' refers to the hollow branches of the tree that were formerly used as quiver of arrows by the Bushmen.
