Description

The Marjosse Bordeaux Blanc is composed of sauvignon blanc 71%, sauvignon gris 15%, semillon 14%, The vineyards have a clay with limestone soil and the average age of the vines planted here is around 25 years old. The oldest is even 75 years old. Chateau Marjosse is owned by Pierre Lurton, a well-known personality in Bordeaux. With experience as manager at Chateau Cheval Blanc and as CEO at Chateau d'Yquem, he has more than earned his spurs in Bordeaux. The Lurton family has had a leading reputation in Bordeaux since 1650 and owns several Chateaux in the region as well as further afield. Situated in the Entre-deux-Mers, in the town of Tizac de Curton, near the Dordogne river, Chateau Marjosse is a prominent part of their wine heritage.

Tasting notes of the Marjosse Bordeaux Blanc

Beautiful pale dress with green reflections, bright. Very delicate nose, with dominant notes of white fruits (pear, white peach, lychee). A lively freshness highlights a beautiful aromatic complexity, mixing grapefruit, white flowers and blackcurrant bud. The salty character of the finish combines with a pleasant bitterness, prolonging the finish.

The extreme weather conditions of the 2024 vintage were a challenge for the winemaker, but ultimately they gave the wine a lot of character. The particularly mild winter allowed for early budding, which quickly led to pressure from fungal diseases such as downy mildew. Spring and summer were mixed, with sunny periods alternating with heavy rainfall. This precipitation helped the vines recover after the relatively warm and dry vintages of 2019, 2020 and 2022. The delayed ripening due to the weather conditions gave the white grape varieties of Marjosse a fresh and lively expression, with an exceptional aromatic character.

The order of the grapes’ ripening was surprising and reminiscent of the 2023 harvest. The harvest began on September 14 with some plots of Sauvignon Blanc and ended on September 25, also with Sauvignon Blanc. The ripening of the different grape varieties proceeded without a clear pattern, making it necessary to check the vineyards daily. This allowed for intervention as quickly as possible to ensure the health of the grapes.

A unique feature of the 2024 vintage is the historically high proportion of Sémillon (71%), after removing some plots of Sauvignon Blanc. The final blend consists of:

Semillon (71%)
Sauvignon Blanc (15%)
Sauvignon Gris (14%)

Each grape variety was harvested separately and vinified following a strict plot selection, to ensure maximum precision in the final blending. The grapes are mainly harvested in the morning, so that we can take advantage of the cool temperatures. This minimizes oxidation and helps to optimally preserve the aromas of the grapes. In the cellar, the grapes are pressed immediately, and the juice is protected from oxidation by means of carbonic snow (dry ice). The resulting juice is kept at a very low temperature on the lees (dead yeast cells) for 8 to 10 days, to release additional aromatic components. After clarification, the wine undergoes a slow fermentation at low temperatures (1 to 2 weeks), with the aim of enhancing the aromatic profile of the wine.

After fermentation, the wine is typically aged for 2 to 3 months on fine lees in concrete tanks, with the lees being stirred twice a week (bâtonnage), depending on the tasting results per lot. This year, we have chosen to complement the freshness of the wine with maturation in 300 to 600 litre oak barrels for 17% of the final blend, to add extra complexity and roundness.

Located in the Entre-deux-Mers region on the right bank of Bordeaux, Château Marjosse is a Carthusian monastery built in 1782. The original owner, Bernard Chénier, a wine merchant from Bordeaux, moved here with his family and planted the first vines on 56 different plots. Adjacent to the Charterhouse, the first winery consisted of rectangular cement vats for fermenting the must.

Château Marjosse was later bought by Alban Deleuze, owner of the Magasins du Louvre in Paris, who carried out extensive work around the Chartreuse and gradually decided to delegate winemaking to the château's administrators. In 1990, Alban Deleuze's son, Georges, leased some plots to a young winegrower, Pierre Lurton.

In 1992, Pierre Lurton, who had grown up at Château Reynier next to this beautiful Chartreuse, moved into a second home at Château Marjosse and over the years bought several parts of the estate from the Deleuze family.

In 2000, Pierre Lurton built a state-of-the-art cellar with more than 40 cement barrels and in 2013 he became the owner of the entire 40-hectare vineyard and of the Chartreuse.

The vineyard of Château Marjosse is located on a clay-limestone soil and is made up of young and old vines, some of which are more than a hundred years old. Merlot, malbec, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon are the grape varieties grown in the vineyards destined for the production of Château Marjosse red. The vineyard dedicated to the production of Château Marjosse white covers 12 hectares, with vines ranging in age from 25 to 75 years for the oldest. The grape varieties are Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris, Sémillon and Muscadelle.

Together with Jean-Marc Domme, technical director of the château since 2017, Pierre Lurton applies to the wines of Château Marjosse the principles of the vinification of the other prestigious châteaux for which he is responsible. For the first time in the history of the estate, parcel-based vinification has been introduced, with the creation of micro-cuvées in limited quantities with grapes from the most remarkable parcels, in order to express the characteristics and microclimate of each parcel.

Château Marjosse produces Entre-deux-Mers wines of great elegance and aromatic richness.
