Description
In the eastern part of the Douro, near the Spanish border, we find Quinta do Vale Meão, birthplace of Barca Velha, the most famous and highly praised Douro. The quinta is owned by Francisco Javier de Olazabal, the great-great-grandson of Dona Antonia Ferreira who bought the quinta in 1877. The former director of the port house Ferreira started making wine from this exceptional terroir. Their first wine, Meao 1999, was immediately declared the best Portuguese wine of 1999. It is the most famous quinta in Portugal and is also part of the famous Douro Boys. All the wines they now make guarantee an authentic experience of the Douro wines, of course made from the typical Portuguese grape varieties from the Douro region. Quinta do Vale Meão is one of the top in Portugal and you can taste why that is so!
In addition to the well-known Quinta do Vale Meão Tinto, a number of other very special wines are made at Vale Meão, often in very small quantities. These are wines from vineyards on granite soil, which mature in barrels a little longer than the other wines from the quinta - the so-called Monrte Meāo wines. These special wines also have a different grape composition.
The Monte Meão Vinha dos Novos has matured for around 20 months in used French oak and has an alcohol content of 13.5%. The Touriga Nacional grapes were crushed by feet in granite lagares, then transferred to wooden barrels where they fermented for 10 days.
The wines of Vale Meão are considered the absolute best in the Douro and we invite you to discover them. Vale Meão combines the intense taste of the Douro with great refinement.
This is very nice with a fine concentration and a great aftertaste. The wine takes some time to open (so decant in its early years) but with some time and oxygen gradually shows more expressive fruit as it opens. Very vibrant color. Very unique on the nose with notes of flowers and citrus fruits. On the tongue it maintains that floral profile and shows a surprising softness. It has extraordinary elegance and excellent acidity with firm but elegant tannins.

The 2014 Monte Meão Vinha dos Novos ("Granito," referencing the soils, has been dropped from the label name, although this is the same terroir) was aged for 20 months in used French oak and comes in at 14% alcohol. This is nicely done, showing a tightly wound demeanor, fine concentration and a big finish. Closed up front, it gradually shows more expressive fruit as it opens. Surprisingly dense in a vintage that did not typically produce a lot of concentration (the consensus is that Douro Superior was better), it is a little stolid and not quite as elegant as some of the others this issue. That will change as it develops. It is still very fine. Not imported, this runs around 35 euros in Portugal. There were just 7,000 bottles produced.

Tasting Note
Juicy raspberry and cherry pie notes are matched with orange zest, herb and white pepper details in this concentrated, charming red. The firm tannins do not overpower to the tea, floral and mineral notes on the finish. Drink now through 2025. 670 cases made, 50 cases imported. — GS
