Description
Luca is Laura Catena's private project. Laura has made her mark on the wine world and is often called "the face of Argentine wine" because of her significant contributions to the country. She recently presented her 100-year plan: "I want every collector in the world to have Nicolás Catena Zapata in their cellar—that's my dream."
Another dream of Laura Catena was the founding of Luca, named after her eldest son. With Luca, she aims to produce quality wines, where perfect terroir, low yields per hectare, and state-of-the-art winemaking are key. Luca's vineyards are located at altitudes between 900 and 1500 meters and are among the highest in Mendoza. Here, you'll find old vines that, while no longer producing much, maintain the vineyard's high quality (and therefore the wines). She aims to showcase the best expression of each grape variety. Luca has planted six grape varieties in total: Chardonnay, Malbec, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc.
The grapes come from 'Gualtallary', a vineyard in Tupungato, at the foot of the Andes. This made Laura Catena the first to produce a Pinot Noir at an extreme altitude, 1,500 meters above sea level. Warm days alternate with extremely cold nights, contributing to slow, even ripening and the preservation of fresh acidity. Traditional vinification takes place, followed by ten months of aging in oak barrels, 10% of which are new and the rest second- and third-year oak. The Laura Catena Luca Pinot Noir G Lot has a beautiful garnet color in the glass. On the nose, we smell strawberries, cherries, raspberries, leather, and spices. On the palate, this is a full-bodied Pinot Noir with notes of leather, raspberries, and spicy oak. The wine combines the elegance of the Old World with the ripe fruit of the New World. Enjoy lightly chilled. Delicious with grilled salmon and tuna. Also delicious in combination with roast duck breast with cranberry sauce.

The 2021 Pinot Noir G Lot is livelier and fresher than the 2020 I tasted next to it. It's peachy, with more balance and harmony and more finesse, minerality and freshness and better-integrated oak.
Luca is a separate project from the Catena family.

Savory herbs and spices with a hint of dried orange, undergrowth and fresh cranberries on the nose. Dry on the palate with savory herbs and spices that extend to a long, subtle finish. Drink or hold.
