How does this wine taste?
How full and heavy the wine feels in your mouth, like the difference between skimmed milk and cream. More alcohol, sugar and oak ageing make a wine fuller.
The drying, grippy feel on your gums and tongue, as with strong tea. It comes from the skins and seeds of black grapes and from oak, and softens with age.
How much sugar you taste, from dry to sweet. Fruity is not the same as sweet: a dry wine can taste of ripe fruit.
How fresh and juicy the wine is: acidity makes your mouth water. High acidity tastes lively and refreshing, low acidity soft and round.

Log inWinery Le Chiuse
Le Chiuse is a traditional Brunello estate in Montalcino known for a restrained, precise style that emphasizes provenance and balance. Led by Lorenzo Magnelli, the estate works exclusively with its own organically grown grapes. The wines are characterized by purity, tension, and a clear focus on texture and aging potential, with a style that consciously avoids over-extraction or over-ripeness.
More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
Le Chiuse's vineyards are located on the northern slopes of Montalcino, where the influence of altitude and a cooler climate ensures longer ripening and retention of freshness. The soils include sandstone and clay, which contribute to both tension and refinement. The 2020 vintage was characterized by warm conditions, but with sufficient tempering to maintain elegance and balance.
Vineyards
The plots are monitored and harvested individually, with a clear selection based on exposure and soil type. Fruit from cooler, eastern-facing plots produces grapes with more tension and structure. Yields are limited, resulting in concentration without heaviness. The total production of this vintage is approximately 18,800 bottles.
Grape varieties and composition
The wine is made entirely from Sangiovese. This grape expresses itself here in a transparent style, emphasizing aromatic clarity, fine tannins, and lively acidity rather than power or extraction.
Harvest, vinification and maturation
The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected. Vinification focuses on gentle extraction to preserve finesse and aromatic precision. Maturation takes place in large wooden barrels, where the wood plays a supporting role, allowing the fruit and structure to dominate. The wine is aged for balance and gradual development in the bottle.
Color, smell and taste
The wine displays a bright ruby red color. The nose opens delicately with aromas of roses, violets, and red fruits such as cherry and raspberry, complemented by subtle spice and mineral notes reminiscent of wet stone. On the palate, the wine combines a striking freshness with a soft, almost silky texture. The fruit profile is clear and precise, with a light sweetness beautifully contrasted by lively acidity. The tannins are fine and grippy, without being sharp, and provide structure for the long, balanced finish that combines tension and elegance.
Development and drinking window
The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino from Le Chiuse is already approachable thanks to its balance and finesse, but it clearly has ageing potential. Professional reviews suggest several drinking windows, ranging from 2026 to 2045. The wine will continue to refine and become more complex in the coming years.
Summary of professional reviews
Monica Larner of The Wine Advocate awarded the wine 96 points, praising its transparency, tension, and combination of intense fruit with fresh acidity and silky tannins. Eric Guido of Vinous awarded it 95 points, highlighting the floral character, refined texture, and harmonious balance within the warm vintage. Both reviewers consider this wine a particularly successful and elegant interpretation of Brunello in 2020.

The Le Chiuse 2021 Brunello di Montalcino is a lovely wine and one of my favorites from a vintage that is not always easy to read. It delivers its message clearly with dark fruit, blue flower, grilled herb and sweet cedar, showing a sense of fullness and aromatic completeness that is not always present in this year. Soft and silky on the palate, the wine offers gentle, powdery tannins supported by good underlying structure, achieving balance without force. Sourced as a special selection from eight hectares of organically farmed vineyards with cool exposures, this bottling demonstrates how site and restraint can successfully interpret variety and vintage. Production is 19,800 bottles.
Le Chiuse is a historic Brunello property closely associated with Biondi-Santi, today producing magnificent and deeply traditional wines under the stewardship of Lorenzo Magnelli and his family. The estate’s vineyards lie at 300 meters above sea level on the cooler northern side of the appellation, where clay and sandstone soils once supplied fruit for the Riserva wines of Tancredi and later Franco Biondi Santi. Le Chiuse’s late-release Diecianni program, which holds Brunello back for an additional 10 years of cellar aging, reaches its highest expression with the epic 2016 vintage, affirming the site’s legendary status in Montalcino.

From: The Exquisite 2021 Brunellos (Nov 2025)
The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino opens in the glass with a youthful blend of dried flowers, underbrush, crushed rocks and dried black cherries. It is surprisingly round and soothing to the senses, with waves of pure silk and red berry fruits elevated by a core of vibrant acidity. Minerality comes through in the finish, crunchy and long, as sweet tannins frame the experience remarkably well. This is a gorgeous interpretation of the vintage, yet patience is required.
- By Eric Guido on November 2025
A tried and true classic, Le Chiuse represents traditional winemaking from the northeast of Montalcino. Each year, the Brunello Annate stands out for its purity and old-school leanings. However, the real treasure is the Riserva Diecianni, which is released a full ten years post-harvest. Some vintages are obviously more exciting than others, but this release of the 2016 is sure to garner a lot of attention. The 2016 Riserva clearly reminds me of why I love the vintage so much. It’s a classy and regal Brunello of the highest order, still quite youthful and packed full of potential.

waarom le chiuse zo gewild is
