Description
Quinta de São Luiz is part of the famous port house Kopke. They saw great potential in the terroir and the age-old vineyards. São Luiz is located in the heart of the Douro region on the left bank of the river between Régua and Pinhão. Due to the construction of the Bagaúste Dam in the 1970s, the water level rose to such an extent that Quinta de São Luiz lost some of its land. To solve this problem, they bought several Quintas in the region to continue their dream. All with an A status and ranging in age from 1972 to 1987. São Luiz currently manages 125 hectares of vineyards. The combination of state-of-the-art technology in the winery and the availability of its own vineyards guarantee beautiful wines.
The Sao Luiz Branco is a blend of the typical grapes Viosinho, Arinto and Folgazão. The manual harvest of Viosinho grapes is at the end of August, followed by the Arinto and Folgozão at the beginning of September. Maceration with skins for about 24 hours, with fermentation in French oak barrels. The wine is aged for 6 months in the same barrels with regular battonage. The Quinta de São Luiz Reserva Branco has luscious aromas of tropical fruit and subtle wood tones emanate from the glass. The taste is perfectly balanced, creamy full with a nice acidity. An intriguing wine with a nice long finish. Ideal with oily fish and white meat.
FACT: For many years the tradition at Quinta de São Luiz was to paint the stone wall white. This piece of history is cherished and that is why the white wall adorns the labels of the São Luiz wines. A fusion of the past and contemporary wines.

The 2020 Branco Reserva São Luiz is mostly a 50/30 blend of Viosinho and Arinto with 20% Folazão, aged for six months in 30% new French oak. It comes in at 13% alcohol. This nicely gobbles up the wood. After showing good depth, it adds good supporting acidity to develop a fresh feel. It is textured, dry and serious. Its finesse and balance help to make it a perfect food wine. This should age for another decade, perhaps more. It may improve and develop too.

Kopke is the world's oldest port house. This port house was founded in 1638 by Cristiano Köpke. This port house specializes in Tawny port and in particular the old Tawny port (the so-called Colheitas). The Colheita port is lighter than a Vintage port and fits many more occasions and meals than a Vintage port. A Colheita is characterized by the brown / almond color, the smell of roasted nuts, raisins and dried fruit. The older the Colheita, the more complex it becomes. 80% of the port made at Kopke is Tawny port. This port house has Tawny port of more than 100 years old.
