Description
The 2023 Monte Meão Branco is a brand new white wine from older vines on the estate and produced with 70% Arinto and 30% Rabigato, fermented and aged in barrels. It has nicely integrated oak and a round palate with a very good balance. It is clean, serious and has some austerity and a very good freshness, finesse and length. It finishes dry, with a chalky and tasty feeling.
In the eastern part of the Douro, near the Spanish border, we find Quinta do Vale Meão, birthplace of Barca Velha, the most famous and highly praised Douro. The quinta is owned by Francisco Javier de Olazabal, the great-great-grandson of Dona Antonia Ferreira who bought the quinta in 1877. The former director of the Ferreira port house started making wine from this exceptional terroir in 1998 with his son, oenologist Xito (Francisco) Olazabal. Their first wine, Meao 1999, was immediately declared the best Portuguese wine of 1999. It is the most famous quinta in Portugal and is also part of the famous Douro Boys. All the wines they make now guarantee an authentic experience of the Douro wines, of course made from the typical Portuguese grape varieties from the Douro region. Quinta do Vale Meão is one of the best in Portugal and you can taste why!

The 2023 Monte Meão Branco is a brand new white from older vines on the property and produced with 70% Arinto and 30% Rabigato, fermented and matured in barrel. It's been blended and is currently in tank waiting for bottling (but they may age it for a little longer in oak vats). It has integrated oak and a round palate with very good balance. It's clean, serious and has some austerity and very good freshness, finesse and length. It finishes dry, with a chalky and tasty feeling.
I've reconnected with Francisco "Xito" Olazabal from Quinta do Vale Meão after many years. They have grown from two reds in the Bordeaux style to a wider portfolio with many more wines, with grapes from their property and some purchased grapes from the same growers. The grand wine is still from the same five vineyards as it was for the first vintage, 1999. They now produce a grand total of 300,000 bottles, including Port. They have 100 hectares of vines. I only tasted the unfortified wines.
