Georges Vernay Winery
Domaine Georges Vernay is an iconic estate in the northern Rhône and played a key role in preserving Condrieu in the 20th century. Today, Christine Vernay is at the helm, with a clear focus on terroir, precision, and sustainable vineyard practices. The steep granite slopes of Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu form the basis for elegant, refined wines with excellent aging potential. More information about this estate can be found under the Winery tab.
2021 Georges Vernay Côte-Rôtie Blonde du Seigneur
Blonde du Seigneur is a classic Côte-Rôtie with finesse, tension and refined structure.
The wine is based primarily on Syrah grapes from granite-rich slopes in the southern part of the Côte-Rôtie, supplemented with a small percentage of Viognier, as is traditional in the appellation. Vinification focuses on precision and balance, with careful extraction and aging in French oak barrels that support the structure without dominating the fruit.
The 2021 vintage
2021 was a cooler and more classic year in the northern Rhône. The wines displayed more tension and refinement than power. Lower yields and longer aging resulted in aromatic complexity and vibrant acidity. This vintage emphasizes elegance, precision, and terroir expression.
Color, smell and taste
In the glass, the wine displays a deep ruby red color with purple reflections. The nose opens with black cherry, blackberry, and violets, complemented by pepper, smoky notes, and subtle spice. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with refined tannins and fresh acidity that create tension. The granite base lends a mineral core and length. The finish is long, elegant, and layered.

A blend of grapes from Bassenon, Maison Rouge and Lancement, the 2019 Cote Rotie Blonde du Seigneur contains about 5% Viognier. Notes of violets and purple raspberries appear on the nose, joined by peppery spice and hints of licorice, while the palate is medium to full-bodied, silky and deep, with a long, mouthwatering finish that echoes of cherries and raspberries.
Picking hadn't yet commenced when I stopped into this historic domaine on the morning of Sunday, September 19th, 2021. Christine Vernay thought the harvest was likely to commence the following day. "This year has traumatized people," she said. "Slopes that have never been frosted—not in my or my father's time—have been frosted. There was a lack of water until April, and since then it has rained, rained, rained. I'm just happy that the grapes we have left on the vines are healthy."
With that cautionary note about the 2021s in mind, what I was able to taste from 2018–2020 is certainly very fine. Vernay described the 2019 vintage as an easy vintage. "It was sunny in the first part of the year, then dry, with a bit of drought in July." But, said Vernay, 10 centimeters of rain in August refreshed the vines, and a few small rains after that with good weather in between led to a trouble-free harvest commencing in mid-September.
The 2020 vintage marked only the third time the harvest here has begun in August, on the 26th (the other years were 2001 and 2003). Vernay says it was another reasonably easy year, but allows that she prefers the structure shown by the 2019s.
Tasting first through the Condrieus, Vermay said, "Viognier doesn't have acidity, but these wines have a sort of salinity that's fresh and provides balance." To paraphrase my clunky translation: Les Chaillées is generally more exuberant, seductive, exotic and round; Coteaux de Vernon expresses the majesty of the slope—spice, menthol, longer in shape on the palate, combining depth and elegance.
In Côte Rôtie, the vines are in the southern sector, where, said Vernay, "Syrah has a delicate expression. Spice, violets, pepper—that's what I'm looking for. The quality of these wines is expressed by depth, not power."
From vines in Condrieu, Saint-joseph and Cote Rotie, Vernay's signature is one of elegance, with the whites showing excellent poise and the reds dominated by red fruit and silky textures. With Vernay's daughter Emma returning to work at the domaine, there appears to be another generation waiting to continue this historic estate's tradition of excellence.

This unique appellation is located in the northern Côtes du Rhône and borders Côte Rôtie. Unlike the latter, the landscape of Condrieu is dominated by granite terraces. This creates the ideal growing conditions for the Viognier grape, which develops a complex and intense aroma here. The wines are therefore very typical and show a pleasant character after several years of aging. Condrieu is now a famous wine region that is flourishing like never before. But it does take effort. Work on the steep slopes is especially difficult. Everything here has to be done by hand, the use of tractors is not possible. This makes the management of the vineyards labor-intensive and expensive, which also explains why the wines are so expensive.
Georges Vernay belongs to the select club of mythical domains of the northern Côtes du Rhône. Georges Vernay founded this winery in 1953 with only 1.5 hectares of vineyard. Thanks to his talent and insight, the reputation of the appellations Condrieu and Côte Rôtie grew. His daughter Christine continues the line of the house. She masterfully mastered the subtlety of Viognier and the expression of their terroir.
