2021 E. Pira e Figli-Chiara Boschis Barolo Via Nuova
How does this wine taste?
How full and heavy the wine feels in your mouth, like the difference between skimmed milk and cream. More alcohol, sugar and oak ageing make a wine fuller.
The drying, grippy feel on your gums and tongue, as with strong tea. It comes from the skins and seeds of black grapes and from oak, and softens with age.
How much sugar you taste, from dry to sweet. Fruity is not the same as sweet: a dry wine can taste of ripe fruit.
How fresh and juicy the wine is: acidity makes your mouth water. High acidity tastes lively and refreshing, low acidity soft and round.

Log inThe 2019 Barolo Cannubi from E. Pira e Figli - Chiara Boschis is an exceptional wine from the prestigious Cannubi vineyard in Barolo, Piedmont. This wine is produced entirely from the Nebbiolo grape, specifically the Michet and Lampia clones, from the estate's own vineyard on the Cannubi hill. The grapes come from a 0.7 hectare plot of 50-year-old vines, located at an altitude of 300 metres with a south/southwest orientation and sandy soils. The vinification and maturation are consistent with the house's other Barolo wines, to emphasise the unique characteristics of the terroir.
The 2019 E. Pira e Figli - Chiara Boschis Barolo Cannubi has a bright ruby red color. On the nose it offers rich aromas of blackcurrant, licorice, subtle notes of red cherries, jasmine and cedar. The palate is warm and powerful, with a pleasant elegance and an important structure with both pronounced and soft tannins. This Barolo goes well with rich meat dishes, game and mature cheeses. It is recommended to decant the wine a few hours before serving to fully develop the aromas.
Antonio Galloni of Vinous Media gave the 2019 Barolo Cannubi 97 points, describing the wine as "absolutely stunning" and "rich and beautifully structured". He praised the precision and barrel aging that works so well here.

This wine represents a blend of fruit from various sites, and 15,000 bottles were created. Showing a classical profile, the E. Pira e Figli - Chiara Boschis 2021 Barolo Via Nuova delivers a firm sense of inner fiber and richness with dark blueberry and black fruit. These aromas are enhanced by ethereal tones of blue flower and aniseed. The tannins are slightly more approachable in this wine compared to the Mosconi, but the intensity and richness of the mouthfeel is about the same.

An intense Barolo with aromas of Parma violets, cinnamon, restrained blood oranges, cherries and licorice. Incredibly precise and defined. Full-bodied on the powerful and graceful palate, with velvety tannins and refreshing, lifted acidity. A lot of substance, with a crunchy style and balance. Long, licorice aftertaste. Best after 2027.

From: 2022 Barolo: Half-Full or Half-Empty? (Jan 2026)
The 2021 Barolo Mosconi is another superb wine from Pio Cesare. Dark red fruit, iron, white pepper, incense, tobacco, licorice, dried herbs and rose petal all hit the palate. This brawny Barolo captures all the structural intensity of Mosconi so well. The more classic style Pio Cesare favors these days goes a long way in balancing much of that intense, unbridled power.
- By Antonio Galloni, January 2026
It’s great to see Pio Cesare bounce back with these superb 2021s after the lackluster 2020s. It's such a shame that Pio Boffa did not live long enough to see these wines. Boffa was a giant, a producer who traveled the world many times over, tirelessly promoting his wines and Piedmont. His are very big shoes to fill. I am not sure the current generation has that same level of pure passion and joy. We will see. For now, the 2021s continue the theme seen in Boffa's later years, a clear move towards a style that favors finesse over power alone. The 2021s are special.
