Donnafugata, a renowned winery from Sicily, has teamed up with fashion house Dolce&Gabbana to release a special edition of their iconic wine Tancredi. This limited edition highlights the rich Sicilian culture and craftsmanship of both brands. The label of the 2021 edition is a true work of art, designed by Dolce & Gabbana. It is inspired by the traditional Sicilian heritage, with motifs of the famous Sicilian cart (carretto siciliano), colorful geometric patterns and warm colors that reflect the sun, sea and culture of the island.
Tancredi is a wine first produced in 1990 and is known for its innovative blend of indigenous and international grape varieties. The name 'Tancredi' is inspired by a character from the famous novel 'Il Gattopardo' (The Tiger Cat), which symbolizes the connection between tradition and modernity.
The Tancredit is a great wine made from international grape varieties with a Mediterranean character. The wine is a blend of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and Nero d'Avola and a little Tannat. The vineyards are located in the Contessa Entellina region at an altitude of between two hundred and six hundred meters. The soil type is chalky clay soil, rich in potassium, magnesium, iron and zinc.
The Tancredi has an intense ruby red colour and offers aromas of plums and blueberries, with subtle spicy hints of licorice and sweet tobacco. On the palate the wine is full and enveloping, with perfectly integrated tannins and a long, elegant finish.
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks with skin maceration for about 14 days at a temperature of 28-30°C. The wine then matures for 14 months in oak barrels and at least 2 years in bottle before being released. Tancredi goes perfectly with red meat and game dishes, but can also be combined well with tuna or oily fish. It is recommended to serve the wine in large glasses at a temperature of 18°C.

De naam Donnafugata betekent letterlijk "vrouw op de vlucht" en verwijst naar Koningin Maria Carolina. Ze ontvluchtte Napels in het begin van de 19e eeuw toen de troepen van Napoleon de stad binnenvielen. Ze vluchtte naar het deel van Sicilië waar we tegenwoordig wijngaarden van Donnafugata vinden. Dit avontuur staat tevens aan de basis van het logo van Donnafugata; het beeld van een vrouw met haar haren in de wind. Dit artistieke is tevens terug te vinden in de zeer opvallende labels die zijn ontworpen door een gerenommeerde kunstenaar. Elk label vertelt zijn eigen verhaald.
Missie
Sicilië stond voorheen voornamelijk bekend om de productie van goedkope bulkwijnen. Het doel van Donnafugata is om te laten zien dat Sicilië alles in huis heeft om wijnen van fantastische kwaliteit voort te brengen. Dit wordt onderstreept door de inmiddels vele internationale onderscheidingen voor hun wijnen, waarmee men Sicilië wereldwijd op de kaart is komen te staan. Donnafugata produceert wijnen afkomstig van het hele eiland. Men heeft de eeuwenoude wijnkelder in Marsala, de Contessa Entellina winery in het westen, de Khamma winery op Pantelleria (een vulkanisch eilandje tussen Sicilië en Afrika) en wijngaarden in het prestigieuze gebied van de Etna.
Milieuvriendelijk
Er wordt bij Donnafugata Sustainable gewerkt. Zo wordt er geen gebruik gemaakt van chemische bestrijdingsmiddelen of kunstmest en loopt er sinds 2011 een project om de CO2 uitstoot zo veel mogelijk te verminderen, Op elke fles van Donnafugata staat tegenwoordig de zogenaamde Carbon Footprint certification.
Naast hun reguliere fraaie assortiment zijn ze ook zeer bekend omwille van de samenwerking tussen Dolce&Gabbana en Donnafugata, het is de perfecte ambassadeur van twee ‘Made in Italy’ producten, verenigd in hun onvoorwaardelijke liefde voor Sicilië.
