Description
The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet from Domaine Bachelet-Monnot is a refined white Burgundy, made from 100% Chardonnay grapes. Puligny-Montrachet is located in the Côte de Beaune. Domaine Bachelet-Monnot's vineyards in Puligny-Montrachet benefit from chalky soil and an ideal microclimate, resulting in grapes with unique minerality and complexity. The grapes are harvested by hand and undergo careful selection. After a gentle pressing, the juice ferments in oak barrels, some of which are new, followed by aging on the fine lees to develop depth and texture.
The Domaine Bachelet-Monnot Puligny-Montrachet has a light straw yellow color with aromas of spring flowers, hints of lime, and honey on the nose, with a taut and mineral-driven nose. The palate is expressive, with lovely tension and a hint of bitter lemon that creates a lively finish.

The Bachelet family is very well-known in the Côte d'Or, owning plots in some of Burgundy's most famous vineyards. Despite this, the family experienced some disagreements about the estate's operations. The youngest generation, brothers Marc and Alex, remained unfazed and studied viticulture at university and completed internships elsewhere in France and the United States. Upon returning to Burgundy, their grandfather decided to give parts of his land not to his own sons, but to his two grandsons. From day one, both boys devoted themselves wholeheartedly to their new endeavors. 2005 was the first vintage that Marc and Alex Bachelet worked independently. What they share is that they are both enormous perfectionists and incredibly eager to learn. They constantly strive to improve and perfect the estate, and with each visit, changes have been made, from the size of the barrels and the duration of the aging process to the temperature of the cellar. In addition to the great wines they make in the prestigious villages of Puligny and Chassagne, Marc and Alexandre Bachelet also make exemplary wines in Maranges and Santenay.

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Village opens in the glass with notes of white peach, citrus oil, spring blossom, pastry cream and struck match. Medium to full-bodied and fleshy but tightly wound, it's lively and mineral, concluding with a chalky finish.
Though quantities are down due to frost, the 2019 vintage has turned out brilliantly at Maranges reference-point Domaine Bachelet-Monnot, where brothers Mark and Alexandre preside over a superb portfolio of serious, structured whites and demonstrative, pleasure-bent reds. Farming organically but without certification, the style here continues to evolve: since 2016, grapes have been crushed before pressing, and the brothers now retain more lees. As has been the case for some time now, white wines ferment and mature in 350-liter barrels. Red wine vinifications are gentle and are followed by maturation in modest percentages of new wood. Everything reviewed here comes warmly recommended.

The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Village has a strict, petrichor/wet limestone-scented bouquet, focused but not powerful. The palate is well balanced with a sappy entry, fine depth for a Village Cru and beautifully-judged acidity. A dab of spice enlivens the finish. This is an excellent, citrus-driven Puligny.

“We are missing some cuvées this year because of the frost. We have only two or three barrels of some Premier Crus. We lost around 60% of the volume. The candles saved some of the vines in Puligny-Montrachet. There were 13 treatments during the year - sometimes twice a week when it rained just after spraying. It was very complicated. We started the picking on 19 September in good conditions with good acidity levels. It was surprisingly homogeneous in terms of ripeness, considering the frost and difficult ripeness cycles. We de-leafed on 9 August to obtain the ripeness and mitigate against oïdium and mildew. The reds were cropped between 23-26hL/ha – it was a ‘demi-récolte’ and they underwent an eight- or nine-day cuvaison. We pressed for around 3.5 hours, longer and gentler than usual, and gradually reduced the amount of SO2, year by year. The fermentation was very rapid - just two weeks. We will probably bottle the reds a little earlier, at the end of the year and the whites next March.” It’s a depleted portfolio this year, with cuvées such as the Meursault Clos du Cromin, Pommard Chanlins and Saint-Aubin En Remilly succumbing to the frost and rot. Yet what survived sends tingles down the spine, not least a brilliant duo in the form of the Puligny Les Referts and Folatières, while the Maranges Les Fussières demonstrates what this oft-overlooked appellation can do in the right hands. Those right hands come a little better than Marc and Alexandre Bachelet.
