Winery Le Tertre Roteboeuf
Le Tertre Roteboeuf is François Mitjavile's iconic Saint-Émilion estate. Since the 1980s, the château has been known for its ripe, opulent, yet refined style, with low yields and a pronounced terroir expression. The wines combine intensity with suppleness and are sought after worldwide by lovers of classic yet sensual Saint-Émilion. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region and year 2022
2022 is a powerful and sunny year in Bordeaux, with concentrated fruit and ripe tannins. On the chalky slopes of Saint-Émilion, this produces a wine with great depth and richness, yet thanks to careful selection and vinification, Le Tertre Roteboeuf retains its characteristic refinement and harmony.
Vineyards and grape varieties
The vineyards are situated on chalky and clay-rich soils on the outskirts of Saint-Émilion. The blend consists primarily of Merlot with a significant portion of Cabernet Franc, which provides aromatic complexity, freshness, and structure alongside the ripe core of the fruit.
Vinification and maturation
Low yields and careful selection of grapes are used. Vinification focuses on extraction while preserving suppleness, followed by aging in oak barriques, which give the wine added depth and texture without losing its refinement.
Color, smell and taste
Deep ruby red in color. Expressive aromas of blackberries, espresso, rose petals, spices, and subtle smoky notes on the nose.
The palate is full and supple, with a creamy texture and concentrated dark fruit. The wine is simultaneously opulent and refined, with a seamless structure and a long, aromatic finish revealing spice, floral nuances, and a light smokiness. The balance between maturity and elegance gives the wine an almost ethereal harmony.
Drinking window and development
With a rating of up to 95-97 points, the 2022 Le Tertre Roteboeuf is among the absolute best of the year. The wine clearly has aging potential and will continue to deepen and refine over the coming decades.
Summary of professional reviews
The 2022 is praised for its exotic character, seamless structure, and aromatic length. Ripe black fruit, espresso, roses, and spices converge in a concentrated yet harmonious Saint-Émilion with great potential.

Parker
Never one to shy away from risks, proprietor François Mitjaville opted to encourage the vintage's inherently more evolved style to arrive at its logical conclusion, so he kept his chai at a rather warm 17 degrees Celsius throughout the year. The result is a rather wild, carnal 2021 Le Tertre Roteboeuf that mingles the estate's signatures of rich dark fruits, espresso roast and exotic spices with more savory suggestions of saddle leather and smoked meats. Medium to full-bodied, broad and layered, with supple tannins and the evident ripeness that Mitjaville manages to attain, whatever the vintage, it concludes with a long, meaty finish. I tend to love Tertre Roteboeuf in cooler, more challenging vintages, but the 2021's more animal side disconcerts me.

2031 - 2061
From: 2021 Bordeaux: L’Enfant Terrible (Feb 2024)
The 2021 Tertre-Rôteboeuf is a dark, sensual wine. Deceptive in its mid-weight feel, the 2021 is wonderfully persistent and nuanced from start to finish. Kirsch, sweet spice, tobacco, mint, dried flowers, mocha, rose petal and cinnamon are all beautifully delineated. The 2021 was bottled just a few months before this tasting. My impression is that it is still recovering from bottle shock. As always, Tertre-Rôteboeuf is distinguished by its thrilling inner perfume, sweetness and overall character.

Château Tertre Roteboeuf
Château Tertre Roteboeuf is owned by François Mitjavile, a philosophically minded winegrower with an idiosyncratic style. He makes extraordinarily pure wines for which he only harvests the grapes when they are at the extreme of their maturation process. The grapes are already raisin-like. As a result, yields are particularly low, sometimes below 20 hl/ha. The soil of the vineyard consists of limestone and clay, which has a cooling effect that allows François to harvest his grapes late.
François is a passionate and charismatic man who works differently from everyone else, refusing to join the "Bordeaux circus", as he calls it. We were able to convince him to deliver a few cases of his fabulous wines to us. His wines were discovered in 1987 by Robert Parker, who has since continued to describe the wines with the most laudatory superlatives.
The Mitjavile family also owns Domaine de Cambes and Roc de C on the right bank
