Description
Château la Mission Haut-Brion is located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, classified as Crus Classés in the 1953 Graves classification. La Mission Haut-Brion is the sister estate of Château Haut-Brion. The winery belongs to the Graves wine region, in the commune of Talence with an additional estate in Pessac. The winery also produces a second wine from younger vines, La Chapelle de la Mission, since the 1991 vintage, and the dry white wine Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc since the merger of Château Laville Haut-Brion in 2010. The vineyards extend over 21 hectares between Pessac and Léognan. The white Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc, has an annual production of 500 to 700 cases.
The 2021 La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc has a much more nuanced bouquet than this year’s Haut-Brion Blanc, with scents of Japanese yuzu, crushed rock, apple blossom and a hint of elderflower. The palate is very well balanced, with a refined acidity line — tight and fresh, lively and focused. This wine is tighter and more linear than Haut-Brion, but the precision on the finish is a delight.

A fresh, incipiently complex bouquet of pear, grapefruit, freshly baked bread and wet stones prefaces the 2021 La Mission Haut-Brion, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy wine with a satiny attack that segues into a taut, structured mid-palate built around chalky dry extract, which lend this a more tightly-knit, mordant profile than the broader, fatter and more enveloping Haut-Brion Blanc.

From: 2+2=5: Bordeaux 2021 In Bottle (Feb 2024)
The 2021 La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc has a nuanced, understated bouquet with yellow plum, Anjou pear and hints of honeysuckle—very low key and tightly knit, yet very well-defined. The palate is beautifully balanced with a tangy entry and a citric bead of acidity, revealing orange rind and kaki fruit toward the finish that is full of tension. This is neck and neck with the Haut-Brion Blanc at the moment, yet may surpass it in the long-run.
