Winery Château Haut-Brion

Château Haut-Brion belongs to Bordeaux's absolute elite and is the only First Growth château outside the Médoc. Located in Pessac-Léognan, the estate has a history dating back to the 16th century. Haut-Brion is known for its unique style, which combines refinement, complexity, and a characteristic smoky nuance. Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is the château's second wine and is made with the same care and precision, but with a more accessible profile and earlier drinking potential.

Pessac-Léognan and the 2021 vintage

Pessac-Léognan is known for its gravelly soils, which provide excellent drainage and a pronounced mineral note in the wines. Its proximity to Bordeaux and the Garonne River creates a temperate microclimate that contributes to the aromatic precision.

The 2021 vintage was characterized by a cool growing season with higher than average rainfall. This resulted in wines with crisp acidity, moderate alcohol, and classic balance. For Le Clarence de Haut-Brion, this translates to a wine with tension, finesse, and a more restrained power.

Vineyards and origins of Le Clarence de Haut-Brion

The grapes for Le Clarence de Haut-Brion come from plots not selected for Château Haut-Brion's Grand Vin. These are younger vines and specific lots that are stylistically more suited to the expression of the second wine.

The vineyards are situated on deep gravel soils with clay and sand in the subsoil. These soils contribute to the structure, freshness, and characteristic aromatic refinement of Haut-Brion wines.

Grape varieties and composition

The 2021 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is made from a classic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and a smaller portion of Cabernet Franc. The exact proportions are determined each vintage based on quality and balance.

Merlot provides roundness and juiciness, while Cabernet Sauvignon adds structure, freshness, and aging potential. Cabernet Franc contributes aromatic tension and floral nuances.

Harvest and vinification

The harvest was carried out with great precision, with each plot individually assessed for optimal ripeness. After rigorous selection, the grapes were carefully vinified with a focus on gentle extraction.

Fermentation was followed by oak aging, where the wood remains supportive and the emphasis is on balance and integration. This approach results in a wine with a refined structure and a clear aromatic profile.

Color, smell and taste

In the glass, the wine reveals a deep ruby red color. The nose is complex and understated, with aromas of plum, dark berries, and violets, complemented by notes of pencil shavings, licorice, and subtle spices.

On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a seamless texture and a core of ripe fruit. The tannins are supple and refined, while fresh acidity adds tension and length. The finish is long, precise, and elegant.

Structure, style and drinking window

The 2021 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is somewhat closed in its youth, but clearly possesses the structure to further open up in the coming years. The style is classic and balanced, with a focus on finesse rather than power.

Within its drinking window, the wine will gain complexity and harmony, while retaining its freshness and refinement. This makes it attractive for both early consumption and medium-term aging.

Château Haut-Brion is located in the French municipality of Pessac, a few kilometers southwest of the city of Bordeaux. Haut-Brion is the oldest and historically the most colorful Gironde winery - it was here that the first Bordeaux was made from a single vineyard in the 17th century, first donated in London coffee houses and praised by many leading writers. In 1935, the winery was bought by Clarence Dillon, an American banker. He invested large sums in the renovation of the chai and the vineyard. In 1960, Haut-Brion became the first premier cru, replacing the wooden barrels with stainless steel tanks. In 1983, the Dillon family bought the adjacent Château la Mission Haut-Brion.

The vineyard covers an area of 51 hectares of which just over 48 hectares are planted with red grape varieties (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) and just under 3 hectares are dedicated to white grape varieties (Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc).
