Description
Château Gruaud-Larose is a wine estate in Bordeaux and a second cru from the 1855 Bordeaux wine classification system. It is located in the village of Saint-Julien. For a long time it was one of the most important châteaux in the village, only overshadowed by the - originally undivided - Léoville. This cru, located behind Ch. Branaire Ducru and next to Ch. Lagrange, benefits from a magnificent terroir of stony deposits (from the Gironde, 700,000 years ago). It has belonged to the Merlaut family since 1997 and in recent years the wines have been awarded very high ratings without exception and their Gruaud-Larose is above all a super feminine, refined and delicate, but beautifully concentrated St. Julien. The vineyards are (or are in conversion) to organic viticulture.
The Sarget Gruaud Larose is the 2nd wine of Chateau Gruaud Larose and as is so often the case with a 2nd wine, the price/quality is certainly excellent compared to the 1st wine. The Sarget de Gruaud Larose is composed of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon supplemented with Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc and has a deep red color with purple-black hues in the glass. In the nose, the wine has lively aromas of blueberries, warm plums and chocolate-covered cherries with hints of mocha, a bit of leather and a touch of potpourri. Medium to full bodied in the mouth with a backbone of fine-grained tannins and a good freshness that ends perfectly with a long aftertaste.
Neal Martin from Vinous writes in his review " ....The palate is malleable on the entry and well balanced, displaying a touch of black pepper and gentle grip toward the finish. Considering the growing season, this Deuxième Vin deserves a round of applause. Frankly, it's not that far off the quality of the Grand Vin. "
FACT: The wine is in our conditioned Wine Warehouse and if you come to pick up the wine you will often receive a nice discount. We are almost next to the Rijksweg with plenty of parking. Click here for address

The 2021 Sarget de Gruaud Larose is an attractive wine in the making, exhibiting aromas of sweet berries, cherries and spices, followed by a medium-bodied, ample and fleshy palate that's pure and lively, concluding with a saline finish. It's a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot
In the last few years, Gruaud Larose has been transformed. This 92-hectare vineyard, occupying a single block on the plateau of Saint-Julien, has been extensively restructured: in the past, Merlot, susceptible to frost, had been planted in the highest parts of the vineyards for protection—but those just happened to be the sites best adapted to Cabernet Sauvignon. Now, varieties and soil types are better matched (50% of the vineyard has been replanted); yields are lower, and farming is better: 2019 marked the beginning of organic conversion, but beyond that, the aspiration is to create a durable ecosystem, with wildlife corridors, agroforestry (3,000 trees have been planted), insect houses and so on; soils are worked less often and less deeply and sowed with cover crops. In the winery, the fruit sees multiple sorting before macerations that are gentle but protracted, at comparatively low temperatures, and great attention is paid to selecting which lots of press wine to include in the blend. The results are compelling. This doesn't mark a return to the muscular, rich, rustic style of the Cordier era's heyday but nor does contemporary Gruaud Larose have anything in common with the rather lean, malnourished wines frequently produced in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Instead, we are learning that Gruaud Larose can produce wines that are both elegant and intense. When reviewing the 2019 earlier this year, I suggested that this château seemed to be on the cusp of a new golden era, and this immensely strong showing in the 2021 vintage tends to confirm that supposition.

From: Enticingly Fallible: Bordeaux 2021 En Primeur (May 2022)
The 2021 Sarget de Gruaud Larose was raised in 15% new oak for a planned 15 months. It shows fine lift and commendable precision on a nose of blackberry and briary fruit. The palate is malleable on the entry and well balanced, displaying a touch of black pepper and gentle grip toward the finish. Considering the growing season, this Deuxième Vin deserves a round of applause. Frankly, it's not that far off the quality of the Grand Vin. (12.76% alcohol)

“It was a tough vintage all year round,” I was told at the estate. “September and October saved us, but yields are only around 29hL/ha. I think the final result is above my own expectations. The fact is that we are organic. Biodynamics (over the entire vineyard - due for organic certification in 2022) helped us a lot as we were more intimate with the vineyard and we tasted the berries constantly. It forced us to examine the vines closely. There is a high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (84%) due to a re-grafting of Merlot vines to Cabernet Sauvignon, which now nearly all enters the Grand Vin. Therefore, future vintages will have a similar blend with much more Cabernet Sauvignon than before. We had to be cautious with everything. We don’t use the same recipe. During extraction we had to be very prudent.”

From: Vingt-Vingt Vins: Bordeaux 2020 (May 2021)
The 2020 Sarget de Gruaud has a quite a high-toned, floral bouquet with violet and blueberry aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with plush tannins, fine acidity and just slight peppery notes towards the finish but with very commendable length for a Deuxième Vin. Very fine.
