Description
The former owner and namesake Louis Gaspard d'Estournel was known as the Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe. He decorated the castle in Indian style, gave grand parties and lived beyond his means. In 1852 he was completely destitute and had to sell his domain. He died a year later. Cos d'Estournel is perhaps the Chateau with the most new and advanced technique for making wine. From the harvest to the maturing of the bottles, everything is carefully monitored and carried out with the greatest care. For example, they have managed to create a vinification process in which the wine is transported without pumps. All actions are carried out by gravity. In 1855, the Chateau obtained the 2nd Grand Cru Classé status
Only 53% of production made it to Grand Vin, and the blend is 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Technical director Dominique Arangoïts reports that Cos was spared frost and coulure during flowering, with harvest between September 23 and October 4, and that fermentation was slightly hotter than in recent years, around 28-29 degrees Celsius. The 2021 Cos d’Estournel shows promise, offering rich aromas of dark berries, plums, exotic spices, loam soil and rose petals, followed by a medium to full, deep and seamless palate that is impressively vibrant and concentrated.

The 2021 Cos d'Estournel is very promising, offering up rich aromas of dark berries, plums, exotic spices, loamy soil and rose petals, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and seamless palate that's impressively vibrant and concentrated, with powdery tannins, bright acids and a long, penetrating finish. Only 53% of the production made it into the grand vin, and the blend is 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Technical director Dominique Arangoïts reports that Cos was spared by frost and coulure at flowering, harvesting between September 23 and October 4, and fermenting a touch hotter than has been the case in recent years, at around 28-29 degrees Celsius.

Floral aromas with violets, lavender and currants. Lead pencil, too. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins that caress and please. Elegant and sophisticated. Linear line of tannins running through this. Needs two or three years to soften. Hold for now.

From: 2021 Bordeaux En Primeur: Back to Classicism (May 2022)
The 2021 Cos d'Estournel is a wine of real breadth and volume. It is also quite a departure from recent vintages in that strong Cabernet aromatics are very much front and center. Cedar, tobacco, dried herbs, menthol and licorice lend notable complexity to the bouquet. I expect the 2021 will need time to be at its best. Cos is usually much more alluring in its youth than the reticent but hugely promising 2021.

"We had a very early budbreak and then of course the frost that followed, but our location close to the Gironde River protected us," explained Technical Director Dominique Arangoits. "Flowering took less than a week, as conditions were quite favorable. We had a little bit of rain in August and then almost nothing for the month that followed." Harvest took place between September 23 and October 7. Yields were 35 hectoliters per hectare, a bit lower than normal, but not markedly so.
