Winery Château Bellevue-Mondotte

Château Bellevue-Mondotte is a small, top-quality estate in Saint-Émilion, situated on the limestone plateau next to Château Pavie. Developed in the modern era by Gérard Perse, the winery is known for its powerful, concentrated style, emphasizing ripe fruit and precision. The vineyards are situated on pure limestone, which creates tension and structure in the wines. Since 2022, the estate has been integrated into Château Pavie. More information about this winery can be found under the "Winery" tab.

Region and location

The Bellevue-Mondotte vineyards are located on the prestigious Saint-Émilion limestone plateau. This terroir is known for its natural drainage and mineral tension. In the cooler 2021 vintage, the limestone provided freshness and definition while maintaining sufficient ripeness.

Vineyards and grape varieties

The 2021 vintage is made from 100% Merlot, sourced from low-yielding plots on limestone. This is the last vintage bottled as pure Merlot under the Bellevue-Mondotte name before the estate was fully integrated into Château Pavie.

Harvest, vinification and maturation

After rigorous selection, the grapes are fermented traditionally, with attention to extraction and balance. Aging takes place in oak barriques, which provides structure and refined oak notes without masking the precision of the fruit. In 2021, this resulted in a wine with bright fruit and controlled power.

Color, smell and taste

Deep ruby red with a bright core. The nose offers notes of red and black berries, complemented by accents of black olive, cocoa, and subtle spices. A distinct minerality gives the wine lift.

The palate is medium to full-bodied with a refined texture and ripe, well-integrated tannins. The fruit is juicy and precise, with notes of blackcurrant, dark cherry, and a hint of chocolate. The finish is fresh, clean, and lingering, with a beautiful balance between ripeness and tension.

Drinking window and development

James Suckling awarded this vintage 95 points, highlighting its aromatic precision, texture, and juicy finish. The wine is already accessible, yet possesses sufficient structure to develop further in the coming years. Expect optimal drinking time between approximately 2026 and 2040. This is a 1.5-liter magnum—even more delicious, festive, and with a longer drinking window.
