Description
The 2021 Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot, all matured in new French oak and seems destined to become another classic.
Embodying the essence of great mountain-grown Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine is gloriously opulent and elegant, immediately demanding attention with concentrated aromas of blackcurrant, cassis, ripe blackberry, sweet oak smoke, cedar, tobacco leaf, graphite and violets. On the palate it majestically captures the essence of Pritchard Hill’s terroir, with rich, robust tannins, lush dark berry flavours and refined nuances of sandalwood, savoury dried herbs, anise, vanilla bean, nutmeg, dark chocolate and spice that flow into a long, impeccably polished finish.
The groundbreaking Pritchard Hill vineyards established in 1964 and the winery built in 1968, Chappellet was for many years a standalone estate, situated at up to 1,800 feet above sea level. The estate comprises two parcels of 320 acres, with the striking winery on the original Pritchard farm parcel, but only 104 acres are developed as vineyards. The vineyards have been certified organic since 2012, and the winery’s solar panels cover 100% of the winery’s electricity bill.
This is the successor of the 2019 because 2020 was not released due to the wildfires in Napa Valley, As with all 2021 Napa Valley wines, this one has also received unanimously high ratings and is also very limited available. 2021 vintage and certainly this wine is highly recommended for a beautiful diverse selection of Napa Valley wines in the cellar.

A blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot, all aged in new French oak, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill appears destined to be another classic. Penetrating aromas of cassis and red berries are joined by hints of violets, dried sage, crushed stones and pencil shavings on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is rich and intensely concentrated, framed by dusty tannins that linger easily on the long, mouthwatering finish.
The pioneering Pritchard Hill winery, with vineyards established in 1964 and the winery built in 1968, Chappellet was on its own for years, perched at up to 1,800 feet above sea level. The property encompasses two 320-acre parcels, with the striking winery on the original Pritchard farm parcel, yet only 104 acres have been developed as vineyards. The vineyards have been certified organic since 2012, while the winery's solar panels offset 100% of the winery's electric bill.
On this visit, Chief Operating Officer Dominic Chappellet and VP of Winemaking Phillip Corallo-Titus—who has been with the winery for more than 30 years—not only showed me the facilities and vineyards but also poured a selection of older wines as well as current releases. Corallo-Titus compared the 2021 wines to those made in 1976 and 2013. "It was a drought, and a pretty bad drought," he said. "They're big wines, kind of a warm vintage, tiny berries and a lot of tannin. The hardest part was getting the tannins soft enough. We had to pull back on extraction."

Notes of crushed dark berries, chocolate black licorice, iodine, bark and graphite. Wide and encompassing on the palate with a full body and ultra-fine, almost weightless tannins. There is a fine, chalky minerality to it with sea shell, iron and cigar box undertones. Beautiful fruit. Firm and polished. Needs time. Try after 2026.

Chappellet is a Napa Valley icon, known for powerful wines from the legendary Pritchard Hill.
Chappellet Winery in Napa Valley
Chappellet was founded in 1967 by Donn and Molly Chappellet. They were pioneers who believed in the potential of the hills above Napa Valley. Their choice for Pritchard Hill turned out to be visionary. Today, this area is one of the most sought-after sites for cabernet sauvignon in California. Chappellet has grown into a true family winery, now run by the second generation.
History and family legacy
When the Chappellets moved to Pritchard Hill, it was still wild and undeveloped. The first vines were planted in the mid-1960s, at a time when Napa Valley was barely known outside the US. The winery quickly gained recognition for producing elegant yet powerful cabernets. Today, Chappellet remains family-owned with a strong focus on sustainability and expressing the unique terroir of the hill.
The vineyards on Pritchard Hill
Pritchard Hill rises above the eastern side of Napa Valley. The vineyards sit between 210 and 600 meters in elevation. This altitude brings long sunny days and cool nights. The soils are mostly volcanic rock and red clay, which produce small, concentrated grapes. Cabernet Sauvignon is the flagship, but Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot also play a role in the blends.
Climate and wine style
Napa Valley’s climate is shaped by cool air drifting in from San Pablo Bay. It allows grapes to ripen slowly while keeping their freshness. Pritchard Hill, however, is a touch warmer and drier, giving wines extra depth and intensity. The result is cabernet with power, layered flavors and the structure to age for decades. The combination of elevation, warmth and volcanic soils is rare in California, making Chappellet stand out.
Fun facts about Chappellet

- Pritchard Hill is not an official appellation, yet the name has become a marker of quality.
- The iconic label, designed in the 1960s, has hardly changed and is instantly recognizable.
- Chappellet wines are served at top restaurants worldwide and are highly sought by collectors.
