The Clon 98 is the name from the new 2021 vintage. Clon 98 or CL98 is the vine clone of the Tinto Fino (Tempranillo), which was mutated in such a way that it could adapt to the extreme climate of the Ribera del Duero. Poor soil, high altitude (800-1000 meters), short warm summers and cold long winters characterize the Ribera del Duero and this explains, among other things, why the wines from the region are so popular. Hard work for the vines makes beautiful wines. Vintage 2021 was an excellent vintage in Ribera del Duero. A particularly cold winter in the first two months of the year allowed the vines to rest well, giving way to a particularly warm spring, with a rainy April, which led to good bud budding and bunch setting. The ripening went exceptionally well thanks to the good water reserves of the vines and the absence of rainfall from early September to mid-October, resulting in a quiet harvest. The Clone 98 is a 100% Tinto Fino, from the Castrillo de la Vega region, located at an average altitude of 800 meters, in the province of Burgos. The grapes come from old vineyards between 26 and 50 years old. Casa Rojos' intention for this Clone 98 is to make a fruity, elegant and very drinkable red wine, so this wine does not undergo very long oak aging (around 180 days) and then stays in concrete to maximize the influence of the oak. to let the wines (wood aromas, tannins) be subordinate to the beautiful fruit. The Clone 98 (CL98) has a deep ruby red color that invites you to explore. The nose shows all the potential of the grape with aromas of black plum, blackberry, thyme and cloves. In the mouth the wine is medium-bodied and is surprisingly fresh, fruity, well structured and lively, with light tannins and a medium, balanced aftertaste.

ABOUT CASA ROJO

THE MOST IMPORTANT VIRTUE OF A WINE IS BALANCE” LAURA MUÑOZ-ROJO - At Casa Rojo they make wines with which José Luis and Laura feel identified. They have the luck and luxury to be able to produce in the areas where they have their roots and admire with the two grapes they are passionate about: Tinta Fina (Tempranillo) in the continental climate of La Ribera del Duero and the Monastrell in our Mediterranean homeland, Tierra de Murcia. Recently, the unique white grapes from Ribero - Galicia have been added, such as Verdejo, Albariño and Sauvignon Blanc. Casa Rojo's vision is clear. “A wine must be a maximum expression of the soil, the grapes, the local climate.”

Casa Rojo has been active since 2010, so it is a fairly young company, but Casa Rojo wines are now available in more than 40 countries, including the USA, Singapore, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Mexico, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, Sweden, Switzerland, etc and demand exceeds supply. Not surprising because the quality of wines, the stories behind the wine and the selection are downright unique.

Uitstekend
Review by Jac
