The Casa Rojo Viñas Bastardas is a wine that combines the regions of Murcia and Ribera del Duero and is a new wine launched in October 2023. The Viñas Bastardas 2021 is the perfect reflection of what Casa Rojo is: innovation, originality, love, balance but above all passion. The wine is a blend of the two typical grapes from the 2 appellations. From the Ribera del Duero comes the Tinto Fino or Tempranillo and from Murcia the Monastrell or Mourvedre. Both are blended in a 50/50% ratio.

The Tempranillo comes from old vineyards between 35 and 100 years old from Burgos and Valladolid. The Monastrell comes from old vines around the Casa Rojo winery in Murcia in the Valle de La Raja. The Tempranillo undergoes alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks and then matures for a minimum of 12 months in used French oak barrels. The Monastrell undergoes alcoholic fermentation in 11,000 liter French oak foudre and then malolactic fermentation in new 500 liter French oak barrels. Finally, the wine matures for a minimum of 12 months in used barrels. The 2021 vintage is considered EXCELENTE in the Ribera del Duero and in the IGP Murcia. In the Ribera del Duero there were no major outliers and the Tempranillo grapes were able to ripen well and could be harvested in perfect dry conditions. The vineyards are around 1000 meters and are between 35-100 years old. In Murcia Casa Rojo has the great advantage that the Monastrell vineyards are at an altitude of 600 meters and are oriented to the north and this results in a lot of fruit, but also good acids.

The crossed-out label of Casa Rojo's "Viñas Bastardas" symbolizes the unique vineyards outside official wine regions. It emphasizes their exceptional quality despite the lack of official recognition.

The Casa Rojo Viñas Bastardas has an attractive intense ruby red color. This blend is characterized by a large amount of excellent fruit, especially red fruit, a very good acidity, freshness and an attractive sweetness. In the nose we smell fresh red fruit in the attack such as cherry, raspberry and red currant, but with some swirling more dark fruit also comes forward and we smell herbs and some leather. A very pleasant fruity somewhat velvety mouthfeel and here the fruit tones complemented by good acidity and a hint of oak come back well with a long aftertaste and good body to enjoy with red meat, such as entrecote. The marriage between Tempranillo and Monastrell is in our opinion very successful and of course, as with all wines from Casa Rojo, the presentation is also great.

This very well balanced wine also provides a unique exercise for SDEN and WSET students to detect aromas typical of Ribera del Duero and other Mediterranean and balsamic aromas that take us to Murcia. Another great creation by Ernesto Peña, Fernanda Vázquez, Pablo Mompeán, Laura Rojo and Jose Luis Gómez, the winemaking team of Casa Rojo.

"LOVE WHAT YOU DO. DO WHAT YOU LOVE" JOSÉ LUIS GÓMEZ -Making great wines takes time and a lot of dedication. Continuous improvement, continuous evolution and the search for perfection in the vineyard and then in the winery, is the only way. Only if you love your work can you show this dedication and passion. “THE MOST IMPORTANT VIRTUE OF A WINE IS BALANCE” LAURA MUÑOZ-ROJO. At Casa Rojo they make wines with which José Luis and Laura feel identified. They have the good fortune and luxury of being able to produce in the areas where they have their roots and admire with the two grapes they are passionate about: Tinta Fina (Tempranillo) in the continental climate of La Ribera del Duero and the Monastrell in our Mediterranean homeland, Tierra de Murcia. Recently, the unique white grapes from Ribero - Galicia have also been added, such as the Verdejo, Albariño and Sauvignon Blanc. Casa Rojo's vision is clear. "A wine should be a maximum expression of the soil, the grapes, the local climate."

Casa Rojo has been active since 2010, so it is a fairly young company, but now the wines of Casa Rojo are available in more than 40 countries, including USA, Singapore, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Mexico, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, Sweden, Switzerland, etc and the demand exceeds the supply. Not surprising because the quality of the wines, the stories behind the wine and the livery are nothing short of unique.
