Description
the Andremily winery
Andremily was founded by Jim Binns, Manfred Krankl's former right-hand man at Sine Qua Non. With his own project, he has taken Rhône varietals from California to unprecedented heights. Andremily has become known for its extremely limited production, meticulous attention to detail, and a style that combines power and elegance. The wines are internationally sought after by collectors and wine enthusiasts and receive rave reviews year after year.
mourvèdre as a grape
Mourvèdre is known as a grape that often has a somewhat rustic and robust character. In the hands of Jim Binns, however, the variety achieves unprecedented brilliance and refinement. At Andremily, Mourvèdre is transformed into a wine that combines power with purity, refinement, and sensual aromatic depth. The 2021 vintage is considered a textbook example of how this grape, when handled perfectly, can develop into an absolute cult wine.
vineyards and origin
The grapes for the 2021 Mourvèdre come from Andremily's new Slide Hill Estate in Edna Valley, supplemented by fruit from the Alta Mesa Vineyard and White Hawk Vineyard in Santa Barbara County. These sites combine sandy soils, cool ocean influences, and ideal ripening conditions, resulting in a wine of intensity, freshness, and complexity. The diversity of the terroirs gives the wine layers of aromatic tension and structure.
blending and vinification
The 2021 Mourvèdre is made with Mourvèdre grapes and a 12% Syrah blend, which adds depth and structure. Vinification was carried out using 75% whole bunches of grapes, which adds tension and complexity to the aroma and tannin structure. After fermentation, the wine matured for 21 months in French barriques, 50% of which were new, and in 600-liter demi-muids. Bottling took place on August 26, 2023, after which the wine rested for several months before release. Only 500 cases were produced, making this wine extremely rare and exclusive. A few magnums were also produced, which will be released as a pair with the Andremily No. 10 2021 Syrah.
tasting notes of the Andremily Mourvèdre 2021
The 2021 Mourvèdre is immediately expressive on the nose. Explosive aromas of blueberries, violets, and juniper are complemented by notes of coffee beans, warm chocolate, anise, and even a hint of grilled Wagyu beef. With each swirl in the glass, the wine unfolds new layers of fragrance and complexity. On the palate, the wine is intensely concentrated yet vibrant with energetic acidity. The tannins are refined and chalky, giving the wine a velvety texture. The finish is endlessly long, aromatic, and imbued with elegance. This wine combines power and refinement in a way rarely seen in Mourvèdre.
review by The Wine Advocate
Erin Brooks of *The Wine Advocate* awarded the 2021 Andremily Mourvèdre 100 points. She describes the wine as a "sapphire-like expression" that elevates the varietal to an unprecedented level. According to the review, the wine is explosive and electric in aroma and flavor, with a perfect balance of fruit intensity, freshness, and refined tannins. The drinking window runs from 2030 to 2050, making this wine a benchmark for Mourvèdre worldwide for decades to come.
style and storage potential
The 2021 Andremily Mourvèdre is a wine of iconic proportions, with both immediate charm and phenomenal aging potential. The combination of pure fruit, energetic freshness, and an endless finish makes it suitable for decades of cellaring. The wine will reach its first maturity around 2030, but it has the power and balance to shine until at least 2050, and possibly even longer.

The 2021 Mourvèdre is another archetypal example of the variety from Andremily, where winemaker Jim Binns manages to polish what can be a naturally rustic variety into a shining, sapphire-like expression. Bottled on August 26 and tasted on October 25, it shows the elegance and juiciness that is characteristic of a cooler growing season. It's explosive and electrically blue on the nose, with incredibly pure aromas of blueberry candy, violet, juniper and accents of coffee beans, warm chocolate, aniseed and grilled Wagyu beef—it continually unfurls to reveal new scents with each return to the glass. The palate is just as impressive with its balance of concentrated, fragrant fruit, fireworks of fresh acidity and finely chalky tannins, and it has a tremendously long, perfumed finish.
The 2021 is blended with 12% Syrah, and fruit comes from Andremily's new Slide Hill estate vineyard, plus the Alta Mesa Vineyard and White Hawk Vineyard in Santa Barbara County. It was vinified using 75% whole clusters and matured around 21 months in 50% new French barriques and 600-liter demi-muids. 500 cases were made, which will be sold as part of a three-bottle box set for $330. A few magnums were also made, which will be sold as part of a two-bottle set with the 2021 No. 10 Syrah.

The grapes for Andremily Wines come from carefully selected vineyards in top areas such as Santa Barbara County and Paso Robles. These regions are known for their excellent terroir for Rhône varieties. Jim Binns and his team strive to create wines that reflect the unique characteristics of their terroir and varietals. A lot of emphasis is placed on manual processes in the vineyard and winery to ensure the highest quality. Due to limited production, Andremily's wines are sold through a waiting list and allocation system to a very limited number of sellers, with more than 90% within America. This means that loyal customers and collectors often get their first chance to buy new releases.
