PS stands for "Pagos Selectionados", selected plots. This is the top wine of this magnificent domain. This cuvée is only marketed in the vintages whose quality meets the strict requirements of top winemaker Mariano Garcia and director Javier Zaccagnini. Exclusive, particularly distinguished wine of the highest level with only the very best grapes! The Aalto PS is matured entirely on new wood. This Aalto PS has a very nice storage potential. Ripe black fruit, good acidity, minerals, herbs, beautiful, well-integrated tannins with an impressive aftertaste.

The 2021 PS has a similar profile as the regular Aalto but with a little bit more of everything, more ripeness—playing dangerously with overripeness—and alcohol (15%), more concentration and power and also more oak that reveals itself in the shape or aromas of fried corn. It's powerful and tannic, in need of years in bottle and/or powerful food. This is very good in its style, impeccably crafted and aged in the best barrels money can buy. 35,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2023.
Aalto keeps faithful to the ripe, powerful and generously oaked profile that made its red wines famous. But their white is the opposite—sharp and fresh, with unnoticeable oak. They control 130 hectares of old vines in nine villages of Ribera del Duero with which they produce 380,000 bottles annually.

From: Ribera del Duero: A Shifting Frontier for Spanish Wine (Nov 2023)
The 2021 PS is 100% Tempranillo, primarily sourced from clay soils in La Horra and Aguilera, and was aged for up to 20 months in French barrels. Garnet-red in hue. Cherry and cola notes complement pine and dried flowers against a vanilla and cedar backdrop. It's broad and creamy in the mouth, with a chalky core and a lasting oaky flavor. This tasting occurred just after bottling, but it promises to develop a more nuanced character in the medium term.

Established in 1999 by Javier Zaccanini and the legendary winemaker Mariano GarcĂa, Aalto was a bold step into the modern era for Ribera del Duero. The concrete and glass winery, completed in 2005, runs on gravity and boasts expansive barrel rooms. The Masaveu and Nozaleda families, who have long histories in Spanish winemaking, joined the venture in 2006. Harvesting from 130 hectares of old vines spread across 200 plots in nine municipalities, Aalto crafts reds with a rich but delicate structure. Their PS takes things up a notch, emphasizing power and opulence. Their Blanco de Parcela explores the possibilities of Verdejo and Godello, pushing the limits for whites in the region. Aalto is very much the embodiment of a modern Ribera del Duero winery.

Aalto was founded in 1999 by Mariano Garcia and Javier Zaccagnini. Mariano Garcia, can look back on a thirty-year career at the famous Vega Sicilia, and is generally regarded as Spain's number 1 winemaker. Thanks to him, Vega Sicilia has acquired name and fame.

Javier Zaccagnini was president of the 'Consejo Regulador' in Ribera del Duero for 6 years. As a result, both have good contacts and ties of friendship with the prominent owners of sufficient, unique vineyards in the best villages of the Ribera del Duero appellation. These owners are today suppliers of the finest Tinto Fino for Aalto and Aalto PS. Both gentlemen are true perfectionists, nothing is left to fate. Bodegas Aalto has approximately 42 hectares of vineyards, of which 32 hectares are planted with blue grape varieties.
The grapes undergo a selection test at the Table de tri. At the slightest irregularity, the bunch of grapes are completely discarded. Afterwards, everything runs according to gravity, so that abrupt actions of the wine pumps disappear, Mariano and Javier want to design plans for the winery themselves. After a 30-month supply in exclusively French oak, the selection is made between Aalto and Aalto PS. Their objective is to vinify a wine that reaches the highest quality status within 20 years.
