Description
Quintessa is one of the iconic wines of Napa Valley, California. This Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated wine is made in Rutherford. Quintessa is produced entirely organically and biodynamically. The 2019 vintage received 100 points from Roger Voss on Wine Enthusiast! Quintessa has an almost European-style digestibility, yet is also truly Napa. Delicious deep fruit, earth, chocolate, licorice, and eucalyptus. Quintessa offers nuance, depth, and great persistence. A complex blend of floral, forest, fruit, and earthy notes harmonizes with fine-grained tannins and lively acidity. Quintessa is ready to drink now for those who prefer a youthful expression, but will also cellar for at least another twenty years for those who appreciate the complexity of age.
ABOUT QUINTESSA
Quintessa, HIDDEN IN THE HEART OF RUTHERFORD, sits on a 280-hectare estate that reflects a diverse geology, biodiversity, exposure, and microclimate. Inspired by this distinctive terrain, founders Agustin and Valeria Huneeus believed it was destined to become one of the world's great wine estates. Today, a total of 160 hectares are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Carménère across 26 vineyard blocks. Each block is harvested—organically and biodynamically—and vinified individually to preserve the nuances of the land.
Depending on the vintage, Quintessa may contain some or all of the five varietals grown on the property: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Carménère. The fruit is harvested early in the morning, then sorted and gravity-fed into oak, stainless steel, or concrete tanks and vinified. Once fermentation and maceration are complete, the wine from each plot is aged separately in French oak for up to two years. After the final Quintessa blend is created, the wine is bottled and aged for another year before release.

According to General Manager Rodrigo Soto, while a couple blocks of the estate vineyard were picked after September 26, none of those post-Glass Fire picks made it into the final blend of the 2020 Proprietary Red Wine. A blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 4% Carmenère and 2% Petit Verdot, it offers up hints of dusty earth, cedar and ripe cherries on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is soft and silky, almost delicate in feel, with a lingering finish.
When I was asked if I'd like to join Quintessa's General Manager, Rodrigo Soto, for a short vertical tasting during his visit to New York City last September, I was glad to be able to squeeze it into my schedule. This superbly situated estate, off Silverado Trail in eastern Rutherford, is turning out some excellent wines under the leadership of Soto and Chief Winemaker Rebekah Wineburg. With 280 acres and anywhere from 6,000 to around 14,000 cases of the Propriety Red Wine produced in a given vintage, it's a wine that combines quality with reasonable availability.

A lovely red with a pretty core of currants, berries, spices and mushrooms. Medium to full body, layers of polished tannins and a juicy finish. A very balanced and fine wine. A little chewy. Drink or hold.
